Fountain Valley is a small town in Riverside County, California, located about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of the city of Riverside and 10 miles (16 km) northeast of the county seat, Chino. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is also home to two high schools: Fountain Valley High School and Chino Hills High School. The area that now makes up Fountain Valley was first settled by American Indians in 1827. A post office called Fountain Valley was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1861, John Cranch discovered oil near present-day Fountain Valley while exploring for petroleum resources on Rancho San Jacinto land south of what is now Garden Grove. The discovery led to a period of rapid growth for the community as people began leasing or buying land around Fountain Valley to drill for oil. In 1875, George Hearst built an refinery here and named it Refinery Hill after his nearby Rancho San Jacinto estate where he had developed a large amount of citrus fruit trees. In 1886, the old San Jacinto church site became a gristmill; it still stands today and is used as a public park open during daylight hours only. In 1902, both Chino Hills High School and Fountain Valley High School were founded by local businessmen with plans to merger their respective schools into one larger school district under the name "FountainValley". However, this merger never came to fruition because each school refused to merge with another school district without first securing approval from their individual boards of trustees - an obstacle which many smaller districts found difficult to overcome. On September 26th 1909 – thanks largely to contributions from residents – construction began on what would become Chino Hills Middle School (). That same year saw the opening of both concrete high schools – located adjacent but separate from one another on opposite ends of downtown Crescent City’s Central Square until that point – making them among America’s first comprehensive middle schools serving students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade (similarly situated today within each municipality within Riverside County).
