Fountain Valley is a small town in northern California, located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Mountains. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1887 by pioneers who began to settle the area following gold discoveries at Sutter's Mill and Telegraph Hill. In 1924, Fountain Valley became an incorporated city after it passed a referendum vote to do so by a large margin. In 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower visited Fountain Valley during his visit to Northern California and declared it "the gateway to Silicon Valley." The townsite that now makes up Fountain Valley was first discovered by miners in 1849. By 1865, ten miles of road had been built leading from Sutter's Mill through what is now downtown Fountain Valley. By 1888, there were over fifty residents living in the area of present-day Fountain Valley. After gold was found at Sutter's Mill in 1848, many wagonloads of goods were unloaded and hauled back east for refinement before being shipped off to New York City and other parts of America. On July 26, 1887 – three years after Gold Rush Day – citizens of nearby Cerritos voted unanimously in favor of incorporation as a community because they felt that their town would benefit from increased trade with neighboring cities as well as new investment opportunities within its borders due to newly discovered goldfields. Fountain Valley grew rapidly during the late 1800s due largely to its relationships with two adjacent communities: Los Angeles and Pasadena (then known as Malibu). These connections led to steady job growth for both men and women alike thanks to burgeoning industries such as citrus fruit packing and textiles manufacturing; these businesses brought new people into town which then helped spur economic development throughout both communities.
