The townsite was first known as "Turkey Lake" because an early settler named John Turkey used this name for his farm in 1859. A post office called Fountain Valley was established in 1875, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Fountain Valley experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location near military bases such as Northrop Grumman's Palmdale Air Force Base and Imperial Chemical Industries' Monterrey Plant. The community grew rapidly after the war ended and saw its population reach over 100,000 by 1950. The postwar boom came to a halt when oil prices collapsed in 1974. However, since then Fountain Valley has seen a resurgence with new development such as an indoor water park and a shopping mall that opened in 2009.
