The Fremont Army Depot was founded in 1892 by Captain John S. Goodwin, who envisioned it as the "largest and most important depot for military stores in the United States." The depot was originally located on Fourth Street between Mission and Stockton streets, but moved to its current location on Webster Drive in 1907. At its peak, the depot held 1 million items, including rifles, ammunition, tents, horses and vehicles. In 1942 the depot was closed due to World War II armament shortages. However, it reopened in 1945 as an army training center and later served as a distribution center for army supplies until it closed in 1980. One of the first gift-giving ceremonies took place when General George Custer received his Medal of Honor from President Grover Cleveland at the old Army Depot on Webster Drive on December 12th, 1894. This custom continued through the Middle Ages and into modern times. The first firearms were purchased by the military in the 16th century. The King of England granted arms licences to his captains in 1565. These licences allowed them to purchase firearms with money they received from Parliament as taxes. Firearms became an integral part of warfare during the 18th century, and War Department Regulations (WDRs) were created in 1795 to regulate such purchases. During World War I, soldiers brought home defeat-weary weapons that had seen service on all sides of Europe and Asia. With no industry available to make replacement parts for these guns, many servicemen died as a result of weapon malfunction or gunshot damage caused by shellfire or enemy bulletins. In response, Congress passed the National Defense Act of 1916 which established American Rifle companies throughout the war effort to produce new types of rifles and shotguns for use by American forces overseas. These companies produced over 140 million rounds of ammunition for American troops in World War I alone! Following World War II, armament manufacturers resumed production but at a much slower pace due to postwar economic restraints on military spending. This slowed down peacetime demand until finally reaching its peak during Vietnam Era when United States government gun sales reached an all-time high! It was not until 1968 that America began scaling back its military commitment again following Watergate – a time when personal handguns outstripped artillery fire! Today’s Army is one heavily armed society; there are few areas where gifts like cigars or TVs are considered appropriate gift giving etiquette!
