By 1886, more than one million pounds of coffee were being roasted annually in New England alone. Coffee became popularized as a social beverage among men because it was an easy way to drain excess fluid from around the neck without having to go through laborious surgery or use an outdoor stove. At this time Fremont had only 1 street named after an individual - Richard Hallett (now Hallett Street). Over time other streets were added such as Irving Bachelder Boulevard (now part of Steiner Road), Fruitvale Avenue (now part of Durant Avenue) and even Piedmont Avenue (now University Ave.) This naming tradition continued into the 21st century with various streets being renamed for individuals or companies whose products had a significant impact on Fremont's economy or community life such as Edwin Channing Way for Eastman Kodak Company or Don Gardner Way for Hewlett-Packard Co., among many others
