Fremont is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The population was 561,362 as of the 2010 census, making it the sixth-most populous city in California and the fifth-largest city in San Francisco County. Fremont is included in the Greater Bay Area metropolitan area, which has a population of 8 million people. Fremont was founded on January 6, 1876 by John Wickersham and his brother James Wickersham. The first post office at Fremont opened on February 14, 1876. The name "Fremont" derives from an Indian word meaning "place where horses are caught." It has been reported that early settlers were advised to avoid naming their town after General Nelson A. Miles because he had already been honored with a larger settlement at Monterey Peninsula. The City Council voted 3-2 on December 4, 1888 to change its name to Fremont because all residents were unanimous in support of changing its name. On July 1, 1890 Fremont became part of the newly formed San Francisco County when it was created from parts of Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. In 1906 William Randolph Hearst donated land to create what would become Hearst Ranch and started construction on what would be known as Hearst Castle; however, only two sides of the castle were completed before it burned down in 1908 due to fire code violations by local developers who thought they could get away with not building any fire retardant materials inside the castle walls even though these laws applied for other structures within Hearst Ranch as well In 1951 Anschutz Entertainment Group built Safeway Pyramid which stands today above Market Street near Interstate 580

Fremont is a city in Northern California, United States. The population was 15,871 at the 2010 census. Fremont is located in the San Joaquin Valley on the edge of the Sacramento–San Bernardino region and its longitude and latitude are both 120°W (the eastern side) and -121°N (the western side). The hills that make up much of Fremont's boundaries are especially conducive to agriculture, with oak forests near the east end and redwood forests near the west end. The first Europeans to visit what would become Fremont were Spanish missionaries in 1639. The area around present-day Fremont was part of Rancho Gabriela until 1847 when it was acquired by John C. Frémont as part of his Mexican land grant from Spain. In 1851, he founded what became known as Frémont College; it opened in 1859. In 1868, Gold Rush fever drove many people out of California for a period of about two years; however, many returned after gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in Nevada. After various ownership changes through various entrepreneurs over the next few decades, Frémont College passed into private hands in 1923 and then state control following World War II until it was sold to an individual investors group led by Patrice Lumineux in 1957. It reverted back to state control following Lumineux's death two years later. In 1969, Jerry Brown became Governor of California and announced his intent to reduce state government spending by 1/5th including abolishing most university degrees programs statewide while increasing funding for K-12 education only; this also included reductions at Frémont College effective January 1st 1970 without notice or opportunity for affected students or employees to compete against each other for jobs within the college community or any other sources of income outside employment opportunities available to them during that time frame...On March 5th 1970 Jerry Brown released a report entitled "A Plan To Save Our Universities" which outlined how reducing State Funding could be achieved through attrition from University Degrees Programs and Other Activities which had been going beyond recommended allocations set forth under Proposition 13 which limitedState Budget appropriations for Higher Education Expansion...The recommendations made within this document helped spur reduction program efforts across all levels including Executive Summary: Reduction Program Efforts will result not only from attrition but also budget cuts required due specifically to Proposition 13 limitations on State Appropriations’ ability provide necessary academic support Diane Ackermann chairing Committee On Academic Affairs & Higher Education Department represented on Task Force established To Review State Funding Levels For Universities In Order To Better Serve Students' Needs.... Effective 1st Jan1970 all departments were directed to develop plans specific TO THE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT-- NOT THE LOCAL GOVERNOR OR CITY MANAGEMENT-- ALL PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE EMPLOYMENT Opportunities MUST BE CONSIDERED IN REDUCTION PLANNING PROCESSES....... From 1970 until 1978 there was no change whatsoever 10% reduction per year...... By 1978-1981 actual reductions had become 2%.
