This led to increased activity around Fremont and new businesses began opening up including a millinery shop owned by Nannie McClintock which continued operating until 1904 when it burned down; also starting this period were some of the earliest automobiles according to historian John Leland In 1870s there were several skirmishes between settlers and Native Americans near present day Fremont; among these events were the Battle of Siskiyou Valley which resulted in three people dead and twenty injuries; as well as more violent clashes such as the Battle of American Fork where two men were killed and ten injured By 1886 most land within present day Fremon City boundaries had been annexed by Oakland so that part of downtown Oakland would be called "Fremont". However business values remained high enough within older sections of town that manyestablishments continued operations into the 20th century despite annexations or changes throughout much of Northern California
