Fremont, California is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It is the seventh most populous city in California and the third most populous city in the Bay Area after Oakland and San Jose. The estimated population was 671,521 as of July 1, 2018. Fremont is located on Highway 101 between Oakland and Berkeley and has a population density of 886 people per square mile (340/km²). The first Europeans to visit what is now Fremont were American traders travelling along the coast of North America when they discovered gold artifacts at Sutter's Mill on October 17, 1848. On December 12, 1849, George Wills founded Waverly Colony near today's Hayward with twelve men including Wills himself under licence from Peter Costantini of Italy. Costantini had been offered land north of Sonoma County by Jedediah Smith for his discovery of gold at Sutters Mill Creek. Fremont was incorporated on May 26, 1851, from part of Hayward and became one of six townships in Contra Costa County set aside for agricultural development near Antioch. The first post office was established here on November 14th, 1853; it closed on December 31st due to lack of customers. In 1865 it reopened as an office for the Central Pacific Railroad serving workers who built that line from Sacramento through Fresno and into Stockton. In 1868–1869 Folsom Lake was created east of Fremont by draining an armistice River Basin eastward from Fort Point Naval Shipyard; this lake became known as Folsom Lake after Major General Ezra Taft Bancroft (1795-1870), United States Secretary Of War under President Andrew Johnson (1865-1912). At its deepest point it measured only seventeen feet (−5 m) below sea level but its surface area increased to over one million acres (+500 km²), making it one tenth the sizeof Yosemite National Park (). Eastwood Avenue ran northwest-southeast through downtown Fremont until 1922 when its routing was changed southward along Interstate 80 following a study which showed that east side streets were more important than west side streets while north side streets were more important than south side streets within Downtown Fremont limits Bancroft Boulevard runs concurrently with Eastwood Avenue northeasterly from downtown until it reaches Interstate 680 just beyond Livermore Valley Regional Airport where it turns northeast towards Daly City before terminating at Fourth Street again just outside Downtown Fremont limits Downtown Fremont boundaries are defined by Third Street east to I-580 west to State Route 438 north to Interstate 590 southeast to Highway 101 south

Fremont is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It is the largest city in its metropolitan area, and has been the most populous since 1850. The population of Fremont was 711,827 as of 2010, making it the fourth-largest city in California. Fremont grew rapidly after its incorporation as a town in 1853 and became an agricultural center with large cotton plantations and other agriculture businesses. The City Council moved to downtown from Griffith Park in 1907. In 1916, the United States Postal Service placed a stamp honoring American explorer John Crighton at Fremont's Telegraph Avenue railway depot, which remains one of the few public buildings designed by US POSTAL SERVICE architects. In 1982, Mayor Dianne Feinstein declared that Fremont was "the most beautiful small town on Earth".
