In 1815, Commodore George Dewey delivered twenty-two cannon carriages and six mortars to Rear Admiral Sir John Blackwood for use in Freetown, Sierra Leone during the Second Barbary War. During World War I, USS Constitution (CVA-4) was loaned to the Royal Navy for three months in 1917 as part of Operation Catapult. While moored at Cherbourg, France, Constitution's guns knocked out two German warships before being returned to her owners on October 3rd 1917. Two weeks later she departed with reinforcements en route back home when coastal batteries opened fire onboard USS Princeton (CV-11). Just prior to reach her destination Captain Halsey ordered all crewmen onto deck hand grenades should they encounter any enemy troops ashore who may be unaware that projectiles could be hurled from such an height! These precautions were successful in halting any hostile assault short of men actually reaching shore! The United States Navy has continued its gift giving tradition through both World Wars II and present day!
