Fremont is a city in Contra Costa County, California. It has a population of over 165,000 people as of the 2010 census.[1] The name Fremont was chosen by pioneer Nathaniel P. Mason from the names of his two ranching companies: the Fremont and Livermore Land & Cattle Company (later renamed California cattle) and the Northern Pacific Railway Company's Fremont Station. This led to many new business owners moving into town including Wernham Hogg who founded Hogg's Clothing Store[8], Julius Seidel who founded Seidel Bros., grocery store[9], Samuel Morse who started Morse Brothers Hardware Store[10], and George Eastman who started Eastman Coaster Lines Incorporated[11]. Many important events during this time happened around or within half a mile (800 meters) of downtown central business district where much socializing took place before entertainment venues like Ascot Park were established across Walnut Street in 1901-1902:[12][13][14][15],[16] When schools closed for summer vacation between 1923-1924 due to World War II; most students living near downtown walked to classes starting Onondaga Road eastward along High Street then walked back home again - one walk taking 4 hours! Some high school athletes even did their early college preparatory courses while attending nearby Alta Loma High School taking all 5 years necessary for graduation! In 1951 Stonington Powers developed a power plant adjacent to Central Avenue that generated electricity for local use from coal mined locally which helped fuel growth westward in downtown Fremont overshadowing older GDP industries such as garment manufacturing west of Market Street However locals still refer to "the old days" when businesses centered around Central Avenue were dominant
Fremont was founded in 1847 by Capt. George Folsom and Josiah Gregg, who named it after the large Fremont Valley near their rancho. The first post office opened in 1848. By 1860, the population had grown to over 10,000 and the city became a railroad town. In 1872, Fremont became the county seat of Contra Costa County.
