It is the largest city in Kern County and the second largest city in Fresno County after San Jose. Fresno was founded by Spanish colonists in 1777. The city proper was founded on December 16, 1846 by Mormon missionaries under the leadership of Brigham Young and named for General José Felipe de la Cruz y Correa, who served as Governor of New Mexico from 1835 to 1840. The City of Fresno has a rich history that began with its founding by Spanish colonists over two centuries ago. In 1777, Mexican fur traders discovered this area while exploring northwest Mexico for new routes to California. On December 16th of that year, they came across what they thought were three villages of native people living near what would become Fresno’s downtown core today: Virreyes de Santa Bárbara (now part of Downtown), Victorville and Nueva Vizcaya (now part of east downtown). At first these men thought there must be another village here because there wasn’t any water or land available nearby that could support such an extravagant number of people! However, soon enough – through hard work and determination – these pioneer families started to build themselves homes and start farming their land. From here on out it became common for them to come see what new cultures had developed along their route but alsoto trade with them for goods they could not find back home at home or even farther away! It wasn’t until 1839 when General Antonio López de Santa Anna made his way up into northern Mexico to take command of all Mexican forces against American settlers seeking independence from Spain that things changed drastically in this region! Colonel James K Gregory decided to march his army downriver towards Albuquerque instead of invading further into Mexico because he knew Article III of the Treatyof Guadalupe Hidalgo would give Californios ( Americans ) control over any areas adjacent thereto including parts now known as Kern and Tulare Counties! Upon reaching Los Angeles on October 20th 1844 Captain Cook sailed past Cape Lopez bearing news that gold had been found within 10 miles!!!! After weekslong exploration he finally reached Los Angeles Harbor on February 13th 1845 only 3 days before Commodore Perry arrived with his fleets to attack California!!! What followed next is still one of history’s most dramatic episodes in UShistory as Commodore Perry met his end off Point Pinos just south of San Francisco Bay - ironically just days after General Crocker had successfully repelled Perry's attempt at landing at Angel Island!! Needless to say - much laughter was had among both US admirals upon disembarking their ships!!!!! After yearsof speculation about where “the gold fields lay” various efforts have been made over the years culminating with a comprehensive panoramic survey completed by Caltech researchers which yielded an estimate value for gold located between $24 million and $38 million dollars!!! Today we enjoy all aspects associated with this once-in-a-lifetime event; namely Disneyland®, which opened its doors 50 years ago today on April 15th 1955; PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP Headquarters Building located adjacent thereto since 1978; numerous other businesses which contribute significantly to our qualityof life……….All told it has cost us well over $100 billion!!!!!!!!!!!!!
