Fresno, California is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. The population of Fresno was 153,471 as of the 2010 census. Fresno has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years and it was founded by Spanish settlers in 1769 as Rancho Argentina de la Nación. In 1846, when California became a United States territory, the area became part of Alta California. The city was incorporated on December 3, 1865. The name “Fresno” comes from two Miwok words meaning “place where cows were milked” and “field where goods were sold”. The first Europeans to visit Fresno were Jesuit explorers who traveled through the area in search of new routes to Mission Bay and Monterey Bay. A group led by Juan Jose Dominguez reached the river mouth on January 25, 1769 and named it Puerto Misery because there was no post office at that point. Mexican soldiers under Lieutenant colonel Francisco Xavier Huerta discovered gold near present-day Oroville on February 9th but did not report it to Huerta’s superiors until after they had taken possession of much of Alta California including Fresno County! On March 7th Captain Blanco found nuggets weighing 20 pounds each at Robert Hatton's mill on the Madera River which soon became one of Mexico's largest gold discoveries! Spanish traders began to arrive in large numbers in Alta California during this time and began trading with the local natives for goods such as meat, clothes, tools and horses. On November 14th1846 Californios participating in Ygnacio Pico de la Mirada's column attacked an encampment of Maynards near what is now Chihuahua City; twenty-one men were killed along with fourteen dogs and five oxen while inflicting maximal damage upon Gabriel Moraga's forces numbering about two hundred cavalrymen under Andrés Castro y Ulloa...In 1847 Antonio Canepa built a mission here called Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes (Our Lady Of Mercy) following proposals from Father José Gomez de Arce inviting them from Caracas duelling with royalists over control over Southern Californias missions...Father Gomez founded his mission less than three miles from today’s plaza Mayor Garcia on April 15th 1849…After Mexican independence many families left central valley for various reasons; some went north into Nevada Territory or west into Oregon Territory before finally settling around Los Angeles County or downriver into Sacramento County east of Paso Robles Canyon.. Some groups such as those associated with Junípero Serra moved southward upriver past Bakersfield into what is now Riverside County.. others such as Jesuits continued their work among these new arrivals upriver until eventually moving back upstream to Mission Viejo.. By 1870 there were only six Catholic churches remaining in Fresno county compared to more than one hundred chapels statewide...By 1880 just one church remained in town – Our Lady Of Loreto – four years later all but two Italian churches also closed within that decade . . . One reason why most Catholics chose not to leave central valley may have been economic: opportunities for economic development are much greater downstream .. ... [f]rom 1850 until 1900 there was very little industry outside agriculture; transportation was both difficult and expensive .. ... In 1915 Mexicans made up almost 60%of all workers employed in manufacturing but their share shrunk markedly thereafter .... Many rural residents still relied heavily upon agriculture for their diet however.... Between 1920 and 1930 farm employment increased 50%, but primarily within ranching families which increasingly diverted resources away from agriculture ...... Fresno was founded on November 5, 1846 by Captain James W. Folsom, who named it in honor of General Mariano Cámpora. The city's first permanent settler was José Joaquín Báez, who arrived on a rancho in what is now Fresno County on July 10, 1847. In 1872, the California Central Railroad built a line from Fresno to Bakersfield and began selling goods to the area south of Fresno. This allowed for more people and businesses to move into the city and helped spur economic development. The arrival of automobiles in thelate 1920s increased traffic demand and caused infrastructure problems such as road construction that continue up to this day. In 1951, Mayor James K. Hahn announced plans to build a new downtown courthouse which would be located near present-day City Hall Park.
