Edwin decided to modernize the coffee experience for his customers by introducing a new bean roast called “Bagel Joe” which became one of Fresno’s most popular products ever! In 1973, Edwin Jr. sold the company to Harry Smith who continued operations as a sole proprietor until he merged it into Starbucks in 1998. At Starbucks, they retained all ownership rights to Maga Coffee Corporation trademarks including Bagel Joe and Maxwell House White Beers which are still produced today!

As early as 1850–1851 Mexican speculators had been investing in gold mines in southern California; by 1852 two men had sold shares worth $1 million in the Atwater mine near Madera. In 1853 Joseph Griggs organized a company to build a road from Sacramento to Stockton so that goods could be shipped upriver to sell at higher prices through Mendocino County. A town called Fresno was founded on June 12, 1854 by settlers from Oregon under charter from Bishop Kearny with land east of Fort Tejon (now hills northeast of downtown). The town became known as Riceville after its founder's brother-in-law Charles Waddell Rice (1784–1855), one of first Mormons Pioneers to arrive in California and start farming thereabouts. By 1860 most residents had emigrated eastward or westward due to racism caused by waves of arrivals during Indian Wars throughout America: many Anglo/European immigrants came for agricultural reasons but also because they felt they would eventually receive equal treatment under Ulysses S. Grant's Reconstruction policies following the Civil War
