At that time there were no commercial fishing fleets in Monterey Bay so this collection represents one of the first significant naval collections ever made in Northern California. From here on many notable maritime events took place throughout Fresno County including during WWII when shiploads of ammunition and supplies were unloaded at Point Conception Naval Air Station; during Hurricane Katrina where local businesses contributed goods like boat parts, electronics and food; or even more recently with efforts being made by Mayor Jerry Brown to make Fresno an epicenter for Maritime History Month . Today there are numerous Shipwrecks open for visitation with special displays about each occurrence while also hosting educational programs about maritime history. There are also several restaurants serving up marine-themed dishes like crab legs wrapped in bacon or lobster tails dipped in grapefruit juice served with french fries and cole slaw. There is even a marine museum located within city limits which features interactive exhibits about various aspects of shipbuilding from old Potomac Island vessels back to modern racing ships

In 1916, during World War I when America was at war with Europe and Austria-Hungary (then Hungary), California voters approved a $15 million bond issue to finance military activities in that conflict. During World War II when America was fighting Japan and Germany (then Nazi Germany), more than $200 million worth of bonds were issued to finance those efforts.
