Fresno, California is the largest city in and the county seat of Fresno County, California. The city is located on the banks of the San Joaquin River and has a population of over 162,000 as of 2009. The first European to visit what is now Fresno was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 15, 1769. This event would later be commemorated by General Santa Anna with his naming of this area after him in 1824. In 1852, part of Yosemite National Park was donated to the United States by Mexico for eventual American annexation at the end of the Mexican-American War. The City Council approved an ordinance establishing a school district in 1899 which would become known as Edison Elementary School District No 1 (later Edison Middle School District No 2). A new courthouse was built in 1905 and named “Hwy 99” after then Governor Hiram Johnson Highway 99 refers to today’s Jct 124 & I-5 exit 4 (I-580) which former Mayor Jerry Brown opened up in 1958 when he built I-5 between Burbank Airport & downtown Fresno

Atwater Village was annexed in 1955 while Nacoochee was annexed in 1957. In recent years, Fresno has become one of California's most diverse cities with significant concentrations of African American, Asian American, Latino/arican American, andHispanicAmerican populations.
