This year’s event featured an airborne parade led by the 1st Fighter Wing at Fullerton Municipal Airport. The parade was followed by a rally on Saturday night at Goodwin Park complete with food and drinks for the troops and their families. Vietnam War veteran Wendell Smith was one of many guests at this year’s event. Wendell shared his experiences from that conflict which helped shape him as an individual today. His talk was well-received by both the crowd and Army Colonel Jeff Hutton who moderated the conversation afterwards. The Fullerton Air Force Base gift history dates back to the early days of the base. The First World War era saw a large influx of military personnel, and so it was only natural that gifts would be given in order to show appreciation. One of the earliest gifts given at AFB was a rifle. A young man named Curtiss donated his rifle in 1917 in memory of his fallen comrades. Since then, AFB has seen an increase in its gift history. In 1946, AFB installations were moved from their original location on Second Street to what is now the eastern wing of the air force main campus. This new location allowed for more flexibility in terms of gifting, and as a result, there have been many amazing items gifted over the years! Some of our most memorable AFB gift histories include: In 1968, Lt.Gen James Doolittle presentedAFB with its first helicopters- AH-1C Cobras! The helicopters played an important role during Operation Desert Storm and remain one of AFB's most popular gifts to date! In 2001, AFB was renamed Fullerton Air Force Base after General Carl “Maj” Schmitt who served as Commanding General during Desert Storm! His donation helped provide much needed supplies and equipment to our Troops during their engagement!
Fullerton, California is a small city located in Orange County, California. The population was estimated to be 108,362 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and has a population of 647,817. The City of Fullerton was incorporated on December 12th, 1902. The cornerstone for the current Fullerton City Hall was laid on July 14th, 1907 by then–Mayor J.B. Grimes and First Lady Clara Potter Blanchard at the corner of West Olive Street and North Seventh Avenue. In 1925 Mayor Burt O’Neill dedicated the new State Capitol Building which replaced an old structure on East Olive Street that had been in use since 1852. Fullerton's economy has grown steadily with support from both governmental and private sources over time; most notably through its location within easy access to both Southern California's major cities as well as its significant agricultural production base including almonds, oranges, tomatoes, grapes and wine grapes. TodayFullerton continues to be one of Central Orange County's most vibrant cities with an active cultural community that includes many businesses and organizations related to arts, music/theatre/film productions and other creative pursuits; full-time residents have contributed $335 million towards local economic development since 2000 alone! Fullerton was founded in 1868 by Captain John C. Fuller and his wife Anna Maria. The city was named for Anna Maria's father, Lorenzo Fullerton, who had moved to the area from Los Angeles in 1845. TheFullertons began farming land in the area and organized a town society in 1872. In 1875, they erected a log cabin as their first building on what is now State Street. TheFullertons were pioneers in many ways and played an important role in developing Fullerton into a major cultural center of Southern California. They donated land for the creation of Fuller Park, which is now one of the most popular parks in Orange County. In 1904, they helped found Claremont Colleges, which today offers over 120 undergraduate programs spanning more than 20 faculties and schools. Captain John C. Fuller died mysteriously at age 71 on November 25, 1916 after a long career as a top executive with various businesses including General Electric Company and Western Union Telegraph Co., both headquartered in Fullerton at that time. He was posthumously honored with two state awards: the Congressional Gold Medal (1948) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1972). His wife AnnaMaria continued to live fulltime until her death on October 16, 1977; she has been buried at Green Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery near Fullerton proper within easy reach of her husband's ashes scattered there centuries earlier!
