The Fullerton Army National Guard was organized on December 12, 1941. The unit was activated as the 244th Infantry Regiment at Fullerton Municipal Airport. The regiment served in World War II, fighting in the Pacific Theater and Europe. After the war, the regiment disbanded on October 1, 1946. On November 15, 1951, the 244th Infantry Regiment re-formed at Fullerton Municipal Airport under the command of Colonel Gail Auerbach and served as a Reserve infantry regiment until it was mobilized for active duty in 1965. The regiment fought in Vietnam and was awarded three battle stars for its service therein. It disbanded again on February 14, 1975. On January 20, 1945, Governor George Deukmejian signed into lawthe "Defense Authorization Act of 1945" which authorized $2 million to be appropriated to fund military construction projects within California's borders. This money would be used to build military facilities throughout California including at Fullerton Municipal Airport where two companies of officers and men from the244th Infantry Regiment were mobilizing for World War II when they were called up to serve their country once again.
