It is the second-most populous city in Orange County after Anaheim and is the largest city on the southern coast of Long Beach Island. The original Fullerton area was named for Francis Fullerton, a landowner and prominent citizen who donated to build a wharf on what is now Harbor Boulevard in 1857. The City of Fullerton was incorporated on April 1, 1893. After years of growth and development in the early 1990s due to waves of new immigrants from Asia and Latin America, Fullerton's economy began to decline with suburbanization taking hold. Fullerton, California was founded on December 29, 1871 by the brothers George and David Fullerton. At the time it was one of Southern California's most agricultural counties. TheFullerton area is now part of the city of Los Angeles. The Fullerton community began as a small farming village on a piece of land that is now bounded by Western Avenue, 5th Street, and Roosevelt Boulevard. In 1887, the brothers purchased 8 acres (3 ha) in what is now downtown Fullerton from J. P. Morgan for $10 per acre. The first store opened in 1888 and full-time grocery and hardware sales started soon after. In 1909, when their father died, theFullertons donated 160 acres (66 ha) to become North Hollywood Park - home to both Los Angeles County High School (now Loyola Marymount University) and Hollywood Park Race Course which still operates today as a multi-use facility with amateur athletic events being its main drawthrottles today! The park also served as an interim location until annexation by Los Angeles in 1915 became permanent! In 1916, City Councilman Harry Chandler proposed thatFullerton become an independent city; this proposal failed but Chandler returned to propose it again in 1923 after seeing how Anaheim had grown rapidly due to annexation into Anaheim Hills! This time approval was granted and Fullerton officially became an independent city on January 3, 1924! As Fullerton grew more diverse with its growing population of Japanese Americans during World War II (many later moved to Laguna Beach), they formed their own police force known as "The Japanese American Police Department". It wasn't until 1951 when they changed their name back to "Police Department" after City Manager Ray Kapp appointed them officers instead of using departmental titles like "Commissioner." A new fire station also opened in 1951; this would be followed by several other additions over the years such as water tower/ pumping station in 1957 (renamed Water Treatment Plant #1), parade ground/ball diamonds in 1960 (named Chavez Ravine Stadium after then Mayor Hector Chavez), high school gymnasiums in 1970 (!), Parking Garage #2(opened 1983) and finally Memorial Auditorium & Training Facility(opened 2003). Today there are over 1,500 full-time employees who provide municipal services including street cleaning; parks maintenance; recycling collection; public health services such as disease control and AIDS prevention through social work outreach programs; trash collection; streetlights replacement; emergency response services including9-1-1 service for medical emergencies or riots etc.; law enforcement including patrol officers assigned exclusively to anti gang task forces or Neighborhood Watch patrols throughout Downtown LA areas adjacent thereto – all without having any specialized training or equipment required beyond basic policing skills! On October 15th 2008 two policemen were shot while patrolling Main Street SE corner Eglinton Avenue SW suite 1010A – they are currently listed as critical but stable at Harborview Medical Center where they have been sinceSunday night October 15th 2008

Fullerton became a major agricultural center in Southern California due to its rich soil and ample water resources. In 1949, the City Council voted to name the downtown area "Fullerton Square" in honor of then-mayor Harry S. Truman as part of a campaign to improve public image in the city during its difficult times following World War II. In 1967, Fullerton joined other cities in Orange County when that county was created from portions of Los Angeles County.
