The yard built warships for both the United States and Japan during World War II and continues today as a major OEM for naval vessels worldwide. In 1951, the city of Fullerton designated Naval Air Station (NAF) Fullerton as its primary military airfield and home to America's first jet fighter squadron--the P-38 Lightning squadrons that flew antisubmarine warfare missions over California during the war years. In 1957, NAF was redesignated Marine Corps Air Station Fullerton (MCAS) after Marine Corps General James "Jap" Mattis became Commandant of Marine Corps at NAF. MCAS served as America's sole land base for Marines in Central California during the Vietnam War era before being closed in 1973 along with many other U.S.'s military installations across Southeast Asia due to budget cuts caused by Congressional pressure on President Richard Nixon's administration. In 1984, MCAS was again redesignated Naval Air Station Fullerton (NASH) after NASH assumed responsibility for all aviation activities at MCAS from Navy Reserve units which had been based there since World War II; NASH remained an active naval station until it was decommissioned on 1 October 1997 following operations at NASH terminated just one day prior due to Hurricane Jeanne damage). NAVSH also assumed responsibility for marine aviation activities at MCAS when NASH vacated its former location adjacent to Horseshoe Bayou which had been used by both agencies since 1923 when NASH relocated from Newport Beach Harbor where it had been established as a private enterprise under contract with then-Governor Alameda County; however, because Horseshoe Bayou lies within City Limits ofFullerton proper and has never been owned or leased by either agency----Fullerton may hold title thereto attributable thereto notwithstanding any contrary intention herein-----Fullerto maintain jurisdiction exercisable through negotiation or otherwise over any part thereof------ On 1 November 1998 NAVSH activated their Helicopter Landing Zone located adjacent to harbor entrance just north of Airport Boulevard; this facility provides helicopter landing and takeoff facilities for navy helicopters conducting search and rescue operations offshore.........In addition, Helicopter Landing Zone includes apron/bridge area providing taxiways and runways suitable for helicopter use............... On November 7, 1881, Fullerton was formally incorporated as a city by the California Legislature. The town had been growing rapidly since it was first settled in the early 1800s and by 1881, its population numbered over 1,000. By 1893, fullerton had become an established agricultural center with a large hogshead brewery and two flour mills. In 1924, the city annexed part of neighboring San Bernardino County and through annexation grew even larger. The population peaked at over 25,000 in 1950 before slowly declining throughout the 1970s and 1980s due to various economic factors. In recent years however, Fullerton has seen a resurgence with new development including an increasing number of high-tech companies and professional athletes.
