Fullerton, California is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 209,717 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Orange County after Anaheim. The city was founded on December 12, 1887 by three brothers who were farmers and ranchers and named it for their father Fullerton Rancho Niguel. The original Fullerton City Park was near present-day downtown Fullerton. The city's first post office opened in 1888 and its first mayor was James Laughlin. In 1896, it annexed part of Garden Grove to form a new municipality and its first treasurer (and later mayor) was John J. McNamara. In 1924, the city annexed Westminster to form a new municipality; however, that annexation did not take place until 1928 because Westminster had already been annexed by Irvine as part of that year's attempt to create an urban area east of the M Free Library District line which separated Irvine from Fullerton proper. That same year saw the incorporation of unincorporated areas of Santa Ana County including portions of West Covina and Cypress Hills into Fullerton; this annexation also did not take place until 1928 because those areas had not yet been organized into municipalities as required by state statute at that time. In 1957, Anaheim became Californias largestcity with over 200 000 residents but Fullerton continued to grow rapidly due in large part to its location relative to other Southern California cities: Anaheim is only about 20 miles (32 km) away from Los Angeles while San Bernardino is about 60 miles (100 km) away from Valley Stream/New Rochelle/Bridgeport/Westchester NY). Also important has been the growth in full-time employment opportunities for women beginning in the early 1960s followed by increased suburbanization throughout Riverside County during that decade – all supportive factors which continue today without major interruption despite occasional drought or economic recessionary cycles

On January 1, 1847, Fullerton was founded by Captain George C. Fuller and his wife Eliza on the Rancho Santa Anita. TheFullertons were the first white people to live in what is now Orange County. They started a tannery, bought land for farming and built a home on what is now Western Avenue. In 1857 they married Emma Smith and moved to their present-day home on Doheny Drive. In 1872 Captain Fuller donated 60 acres of land to the City of Fullerton for use as an open space park that includes today's downtown area. This donation marked the start of what is now called "The Central Park District." In 1893 Captain Fuller donated $10,000 to found The California School of Mines and Metallurgy at Pomona College in Claremont, California which became one of the country's leading universities for engineering and mining studies. Today it remains one of UCLA's most distinguished departments with over 100 students studying engineering at any given time (and counting). Captain George C. Fuller died in 1916 but his wife continued fulltime instruction until her death in 1952. After her death Fullersons daughter became headmistress of Pomona College from 1951-1963 before becomingibrarian at UCLA after leaving school there in 1966
