Fullerton is bordered by Riverside County to the south and east, Orange County to the north and west, and San Bernardino County to the northwest. The city was first settled in 1853 by Mormon pioneers who came from Utah. The name "Fullerton" comes from two words: fuller (a type of wheat) and tonton (a Native American word meaning "to trade"). In 1896, Fullerton became an incorporated town with a population of 24 people. In 1951, Fullerton became a city under the leadership of Mayor Harry Jaffe. Mayor Jaffe also served as City Manager for sixteen years before retiring in 2006. In 1978, Fullerton was designated a National Historic Landmark for its role in the history of defense against Japanese aggression during World War II. On September 30th of that year, then-Mayor Donny Ladd announced that Fullerton would become home to both NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Orange Coast College (OCC). This decision helped grow aviation industry throughout Southern California which continues today at JPL with their new $5 billion dollar research facility known as “Granite Hill” while also creating many high-paying jobs across various industries including engineering, manufacturing, health care and technology. OCC has since grown into one of America's top colleges providing quality education within an environmentally friendly environment while still meeting the needs of students statewide.
