Galt is a small, isolated community located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The community was founded by Angus MacLeod in 1887 as a rancho. It became a town in 1907 and later annexed by Fresno. Galt had a population of 1,545 people in 1920 and 2,023 people in 1940. The population decreased to 798 people by 1960 and 527 people by 2000. The decline can be traced to changes within the local economy that began to arise during the late-1970s recession. In 2001, Galt amalgamated with nearby Kingsburg to form the city of Kingsburg-Galt. The history of Galt begins with Angus MacLeod who settled on Rancho San Joaquin de Conchitas (now part of Galt) in 1887. MacLeod named his new rancho after his father's birthplace at Glencoe, Scotland – Galt being the Gaelic word for "hill". He developed it into an agricultural land base for his cattle and sheep operations which he continued until his death in 1916 at the age of 82 years old. His son Angus MacDonald took over from him until his death in 1951. After MacDonald's death, control passed through several families before it finally reached John Ahern who purchased it from Mr Fenton last year John Ahern first visited Galt on July 4th 1910 while touring Bakersfield County as part of a county government reform delegation that included Controller George Peabody and Sheriff Earl Warren He called attention to its unique geographic location – overlooking both Yosemite National Park and Mono Lake – while also noting its potential for growth due to its rich ranching heritage The town's first store opened on December 12th 1913 under local entrepreneur Wm Huddleston At that time there were only two homes - one belonging to Mrs Ethel Dean (later Mrs Pritchett), wife of Mayor James Pritchett With increased access to water resources available thanks to surface mining activities conducted along the towns riverside starting around 1930, farmers began developing large parcels including what are now downtown Galt . Commercial development commenced during World War II when many families relocated from Bakersfield due to rationing restrictions . Many shops and businesses closed during wartime because food was scarce but business revived once hostilities ended; however dry conditions persisted following Victory Park fire 1944 which destroyed most commercial buildings present at that time During postwar years , much development occurred outside downtown center near present day Highway 129/Fresno Blvd where housing developments have since sprung up nearby such as Lakeshore Village apartments ; these developments have resulted mixed results with some residents disliking their proximity to downtown services while others view them as essential needs for economic vitality
