The Air Force Gift History Collection, housed at the Air National Guard's Galt Base, preserves and shares air force gifts from across the United States. The collection includes items from both World War II and the current era. The history of air force gift giving begins with World War II. In 1942, the USAAF created a program to exchange gifts between American and British military forces. This was known as "Gift Exchange Program." American servicemen sent back gifts such as clothes, tools, cigarettes and candy to their British counterparts. As technology advanced during the war years, so too did the ways in which USAF members could give back to their countries of origin. In 1944, an air traffic control system was developed that allowed NATO allies to communicate with each other without having to send messengers through enemy lines. This system was known as "NATO-Intercept". The USAF contributed funds towards this project and named it "NATO- Arlington". This system allowed for faster communication between Allied forces in Europe. In 1946, General Curtis LeMay decided that America should become a nuclear power. To fulfill this goal he initiated another gift exchange program called "Gift Exchange Program - Atomic Energy." American servicemen donated materials related to nuclear engineering such as valves, pumps and furnaces to help build America's first atomic reactors. These reactors were built at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico beginning in 1947. Throughout these years there was also development within the USAF of what would come to be known as gifting culture or gifting etiquette. One example of how this evolved came in 1951 when General Hoyt Vandenberg instituted a policy forbidding commanders from accepting presents from subordinates unless they had given express consent (i.e., written permission). From then on commanders were limited only to sending personal greetings instead of presents. By following these guidelines givers became more respectful towards those receiving donations while still maintaining good relations with their superiors

The Air Force has been gifting gifts to Galt since the early days of the community. The first gift was a rifle, and it was given to Capt. James Boyd in 1937. In 1941, an airplane was given to Capt. John Hemenway and Lt. Col. Edward Condon as a gift from the Air Force. The first fighter planes were gifted in 1947, and the next year, a bomber was given to Capt. Don Armstrong and Lt. Cols Raymond Jaffe and Jerome Wernick Jr.. From 1951-1957, another bomber was gifted to Galt as part of Operation Crossroads program which provided much-needed assistance to farmers in rural California during the Korean War era!
Galt, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. Galt is about 21 miles east of Fresno and 12 miles north-northwest of Modesto. The name Galt comes from Spanish, "garita," meaning "a small station." In 1853, Major George Atherton founded Galt as a trading post on the route between Stockton and Sacramento. By 1870, Galt had a school and two stores. On July 1, 1873, Galt became an incorporated settlement with a post office and six residents. The first store was built by Jett Cranch and Wm Hays. In 1885, John Sutter established Sutter's Fort at what is now the intersection of State Route 168 and US 101 in order to protect his new mine near modern-day Atwater Village in southeast Fresno County. In 1886–87, miners discovered gold near present-day Abiquiu while working on Sutter's fort; this led to increased visitation to Galt from miners and settlers alike. On May 25, 1912 local citizens organized themselves into a townsite association to improve communication between them and nearby El Dorado Hills during the drought that year; it was not until 1915 that they formalized their incorporation under the name "GALT." That same year saw construction begin on what would become known as the Main Street School building which remain standing today (along with other buildings associated with earlytown life such as Soil Conservation District headquarters). A primary source for information about early pioneers in GALT can be found in David Pogue’s book “California: A History” (1955). Pogue interviews many individuals who were active during those years including James Brougham Sr., Hiram Bingham Sr., Orville Wright Jr., wife Olivette Wright (née Wrights), John Mowbray Sr., business partner Milton Satterwhite (1863–1920) captain of marines Francisco Reyes (1864–1941)and Asa Briggs among others
When the United States Air Force was founded in 1947, its members were restricted to flying only propeller-driven planes. This changed in 1951 when the USAF introduced jet aircraft and began conducting extended operations over a wide area. By 1963, jets had become the norm and the USAF transitioned to jet-powered bombers. The USAF has gifted many types of aircraft to other countries during its history, but the gift that has been most remembered is the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane. The Lockheed P-38 was first delivered to the USAF in 1941 and served as a strategic bomber for many years before being replaced by jets in the 1970s. The RAF received an order for 100 P-38s in 1954 and these became known as “The Thunderbolt” squadronrons. Today, there are two RAF squadrons using P-38s – 8 (Lancaster) and 9 (Hurricane). Although it is not an air force plane, Australia also Received a Lockheed P-38Lightning from America in 1944. The Aircraft acted as an aerial reconnaissance platform during World War II before becoming parts of Australia’s military after hostilities ended. In 1948, Australian Prime Minister John Curtin offered twelve Thunderbolts to America in recognition of American assistance during World War II which included providing 1 million pounds of supplies, ammunition and medical supplies to support Allied forces fighting on European soil at that time. After effects of war led to increased demand for airplanes by various branches of Australian military, four moreThunderbolts were acquired from USAFE with delivery starting on May 15th 1949 . These aircraft were initially operated by No 4 Squadron RAAF., now operating out of Townsville Army Airfield under 6 Group HQ command; however this unit disbanded some time later due largely to budgetary cutbacks within RAAF program structure.)

Galt, California is a small community in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The community was founded by John Galt in 1884 as a post office. It became an incorporated town in 1893. In 1916, Galt was renamed for Edward M. Galt, director of the United States Geological Survey and namesake of Mount Stromberg in nearby Livermore County. The community experienced growth during World War II when military personnel and their families moved to the area for work at Camp Pendleton and Naval Air Station Long Beach. Growth stopped after the war due to the decline of agriculture and population growth in other areas of the San Joaquin Valley. Galt, California was founded by George A. Galt in 1879. The town was named after him and his father, John A. Galt. It became a community on theranch of Rancho Mirage in 1881. In 1912, Galt built a school there which is still in use today.
