Coffee has been enjoyed by humans for over 3000 years. The first written mention of coffee is from an ancient Egyptian text, which mentions coffee beans as a drink that could be ground up and brewed. In 1847, the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to taste coffee and describe it as a "pleasant beverage". Coffee was then known as Koffie in the Netherlands and Europe before it spread to North America in the early 1800s. The first coffee stores were opened in San Francisco in 1851. In Galt, California, the first Starbucks opened its doors on July 29th, 1976. Starbucks became popularized because of its small size (it was at that time the only store open 24 hours), convenience store-like atmosphere, high quality coffee beans, and wide variety of drinks available. Today, Starbucks has more than 2 million employees worldwide and operates more than 67 stores across 20 countries. It is one of largest technological hubs in the world with over 150 patents filed related to coffee technology.

Coffee has been a part of the Galt community for over 100 years. The first coffee shop, The Coffee House, was opened in 1887 by Dr. J.B. Priestman and Mrs. Fenton on Main Street. In 1907, Mr. & Mrs. Hahn started the Galt Chamber of Commerce with their business property on Third Street as their headquarters until they sold it in 1916 to the Reiman family who ran it as a grocery store until 1951 when they closed it and donated it to the Galt Historical Society which continues to run it today as a museum of coffee history
Galt, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Galt is unusual for having no incorporated municipality and instead functions as an unincorporated community under the jurisdiction of the county. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Galt were Spanish missionaries who founded a mission in 1777. The post office was established in 1873, and remained open until 1906. Galt had one resident listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Galt has a number of cultural attractions such as its annual Oktoberfest celebration, which takes place on October 6th each year; its annual golf tournament; and its volunteer fire department. The town also annually hosts the California Rural Fair that features local products and agricultural exhibits from around the state

By the 14th century, coffee had reached Japan. In 1514, Spanish merchants sailing along the Mediterranean discovered Java (now Indonesia) and began trading with local traders. They brought back beans from Java and started selling them in Spain as part of a trade that spanned many centuries. The Dutch began trading with Manila (now Philippines) in 1602. This allowed them to start importing Indian goods such as spices and cloth which helped fuel their economy at a time when Netherlands was struggling financially. Indonesian traders also started trading with Holland during this time which contributed to the development of Dutch-Indonesian relationships that continue until present day. Coffee became popular throughout Europe because it was affordable, easy to grind, and had a rich flavor that appealed to many people at the time. In 1847, Starbucks opened its first store in Seattle – one of the very first coffee shops on North America’s continent! Over ensuing decades, Starbucks grew into one of the world’s leading food retailers with more than 650 stores worldwide!
