Galt, California is a small town in central California. It was founded in 1849 by John Galt and his family. The population of Galt was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Galt became an important center for cattle ranching in the area and its economy still revolves around that industry today. The community has experienced various boom-and-bust cycles throughout its history, but it has always been a fiercely independent town with strong ties to the surrounding rural communities. In recent years, Galt has become known as one of the most environmentally friendly towns in America. They have instituted many innovative programs including mandatory recycling and composting rates for all residents, as well as creating a greenway system which connects their many parks and public buildings.
The first permanent Europeans to visit Galt were the Spanish in 1821. The town was founded by Captain Juan Rodríguez de Mendoza and his men after they discovered gold in the area. The name Galt comes from a word meaning "the Place of Gold." In 1847, Rancho La Garza was granted to José Joaquín Córdova, who named it for his friend, Don José García Lomas y Rivera. It was during this period that Galt developed into a small farming community with modest homes and outbuildings. In 1862, George Hearst purchased part of Rancho La Garza from José Joaquín Córdova. He began to develop the land into what is now Hearst County. In 1870, he built the firstadobe house in Galt and named it Hearst Castle. He also began developing other parts of the town including Town Square which still stands today. Hearst died in 1915 and his widow continued to live at Hearst Castle until her death in 1946. In 1929, she bequeathed all of her holdings to California State University at Berkeley as part of an agreement between them and UC Berkeley Properties Trust which had been created to manage the property after her husband's death. UC Berkeley started making use of many of the castle's buildings including its library and dormitories beginning in 1933 as a result of a deal made between them and then-Governor Earl Warren. In 1978, portions of Castle Hill were donated by Caltech president Sheldon Shearer along with some other properties surrounding it to establish Caltech Village on these lands within GALT boundaries
