The early Roasters Donnybrook Coffee was founded in 1927 by Don Hasenfeld and ran until 1981 when it merged with Maxwell House. At that time, Maxwell House also purchased Donnybrook Coffee’s entire production line including all their storage facilities and equipment. Prior to this merger, Maxwell House had been roasting its own coffee for over eighty years (1927-1989). At that point in time, they were one of only a few companies left manufacturing fresh roasted coffee on a large scale. It is interesting to note that even though they were roasting their own beans back then, they did not use any artificial colors or flavors which would eventually become common among many large-scale businesses today. In fact, some people consider this period before Maxwell House’s ownership of Donnybrook as the golden age of fresh roasted coffee because it was during this time that true quality control was actually achieved for the first time in history! The 1980's: A New Era for Fresh Roasted Coffee In 1980 – just after Maxwell House ended its ownership of Donnybrook Coffee – things changed for the better for both industry entities when Howard Schultz came onto the scene with Starbucks*. Starbucks* started out as a small business selling pre-packaged drinks from truckloads throughout Seattle*. However*, over time they grew into what we now know as an international chain with more than twenty stores across seven continents** *. During Schultz’s tenure at Starbucks*, he made several bold moves which helped bring about a new era of quality assurance within their company** *. One such move involved increasing research into different roast styles so that they could offer customers specific taste preferences*** *. This led to them introducing two new coffees*: “Latte art” which featured smooth milk chocolateiness combined with extremely light roast personality; and “Pumpkin Spice Latte” which contained pumpkin puree instead of milk*. Additionally*, Schultz instituted strict Quality Control Procedures (* * * *) ensuring that each cup sold through their stores bore high levels of quality control standards** *. This led to an increase in sales across all channels*** *. Overall*, these changes within Starbucks* set the tone for how future retailers would approach fresh roasted coffee***** .
