Galt, California is a small town located in the north-central corner of San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. Galt is bordered by San Miguel to the east and west, Carpinteria to the south and north, and Morro Bay to the northwest. Galt began as an agricultural community in 1853 when James Galt purchased 640 acres of land from Francisco Arguello. Galt built a sawmill on his property in 1854, which became one of the largest in California. In 1865, Galt founded The New School District #1 (later renamed The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District), which remains one of the largest school districts in California today. In 1902, General Electric laid track for its first power line from San Diego to Santa Barbara through Galt; this created what is now known as GE Power Lines #1 and #2. In 1947, A+E Broadcasting Corporation moved its studios from Redondo Beach to GALT after purchasing Los Angeles Times newspapers from Hearst Corporation. The townspeople of GALT have helped support many local businesses over the years including Cargill Inc., First National Bank of America, Pico Rivera Winery & Conference Center (), Jardin du Luxembourg (), Wacoal USA (), HBO Asia Pacific () and Scripps Howard Media (). Galt is a small town in Kern County, California, located east of Bakersfield. The population was 1,561 at the 2010 census. Galt has been inhabited by the Chumash and Ohlone people for over 10,000 years. The first white person to arrive in what is now Galt was John C. Fremont who camped there in 1848 while exploring the area which he named "Napa Valley." The town was platted in 1872 by James Fenton and incorporated on December 5 of that year. It became part of Kern County on February 3, 1893. In 1906, Galt annexed parts of Cardenas and Ramona valleys which made it up to a total population of 2,362 residents. The first store in Galt opened on October 12, 1912 as the "Cardenas Store". It later became known as the "Fremont Hardware Store". In 1915 Fenton donated land to build an elementary school which would serve as a community center until 1961 when it closed due to financial difficulties. The school reopened as Galt Elementary School under new management in 1971 before eventually being moved to its current location within the old post office building in 1998. Galt, California was founded on November 29, 1849 by George Galt and his wife Eliza. The town was named after General John C. Fremont who had fought in the Mexican-American War. Galt's father, a Saddleback Mountains rancher, had died in 1847 before Galt could reach adulthood. The first store in Galt was opened by Wm. A. Johnson on December 10, 1850. By 1861 there were six stores and sixty residents in the town of about 100 people. In 1862 a post office was established with one letter per day service; it closed on February 6, 1865 due to low patronage rates. In 1865 an agreement was made between the United States government and seven ranchers to sell 720 square miles of land around Galt for $1 million dollars which would be used for irrigation purposes only; this area is now known as present-day Kern County. The post office reopened on January 1, 1867 with one letter per day service; it closed again on October 3rd due to low patronage rates agains rest of the country during that time period because of the Civil War being fought at home primarily out of necessity rather than money or investment opportunities unlike today where commerce has taken over from farming
