Galt is a small town in the East Bay of San Francisco, California. It lies just east of Interstate 80 and west of Interstate 680. Galt is located in Alameda County. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Galt is named after Francis Galt, an early settler and surveyor who surveyed the area in 1851-2. Galt built his own cabin on a rise overlooking the little community, which he called "The Rancho". He also developed grazing land and a small farm near present-day Galt along with other pioneering settlers including John Blythe and Samuel Morse. In 1856, three men - James Stillwell, Chauncey Lewis ( alias John Bigelow), and Moses Brown - established telegraph service between Oakland and San Francisco using horseback Telegraph Road through what is now downtown Oakland. They named their new town after Galt's rancho; it reached its peak population of about 150 people around 1880 but declined gradually thereafter due to competition from larger towns such as Emeryville and Berkeley. In 1888, GALT residents voted to establish themselves as a city under the name of "GALT", with streets being laid out according to Spanish naming convention: Avenida de los Angeles (Street off First Street), Avintia (from Avenida de la Mujer [Avenue of Women]), Amparo (from Amaro Avenue or Barker Place), Obispo (named for Bishop Carlos Obispo [1824-1900], founder of Latin American University), Tejas (from Thousand Oaks Boulevard). However, incorporation did not take place until 1893 when City Councilwoman Lucy analytics Moreno successfully lobbied for it citing fears that annexation by Emeryville would create expensive transportation costs attributable to two jurisdictions sharing one airport runway. Although never annexed by Emeryville proper, from 1903 until 1922 GALT shared jurisdiction over much of Emeryville's north side including Alameda Park with its more recent neighbor on that side known today as Fremont before rejoining city government proper in 1924 In 1931 City Councilman Harry Powelson proposed annexing neighboring unincorporated areas within city limits if approved by voters referendum; this proposal failed because only 50% voting occurred among all registered city residents interested in annexation . In 1934 councilman Maurice Herring proposed annexing part of Fremont without any vote but this proposal too met rejection because only 20% voting occurred among all registered city residents interested in annexation . All these proposals were eventually successful though; annexed areas included portions of Hayward before reverting back to city government proper on April 2nd 1946 while parts survived into 1984 when they merged with Hayward into one large municipality

Galt, California is an agricultural and mining town located in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. Galt was founded in 1853 as a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Sacramento and Mexico City. The community became one of the most important trading posts on the Oregon-California Trail, and later served as a stopping place for traders travelling between San Francisco and points east. Galt was also known for its wine production, which began in 1876. In 1881, Galt was renamed after George Atwood Gault, an American politician who had played a significant role in improving communication and trade along the Oregon-California Trail. In 1907, Gault donated land to the town to help it become more self-sufficient. The town continued to grow during World War II; by 1942, it had over 50 businesses and 1,000 residents. After the war ended, however, Galt slowly declined until becoming a ghost town in 2000.
