Galt, California is a small town located in northeastern California. The population of Galt was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Modesto metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Galt were Spanish Jesuit missionaries in 1769, who built a mission here and named it San Francisco de los Padres Ángeles (St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral). When Captn Juan Bautista Loma discovered and explored inland California in 1776, he called the area "Galten" (meaning "place where water gathers"), after one of his two mines near present-day Redding. In 1847, George C. Ketchum platted and named Galt after Captain John Sutter's discovery of gold on the Russian River at Oroville on March 24, 1848. By 1860, most of Galt had been founded as a result ofannonces from prospectors seeking rich goldfields in northern California. A post office was established at Galt on February 14th, 1861; it continues to serve today. The town prospered due to its location and access to Cache Valley supplies for agriculture and ranching; by 1870 there were over 100 businesses in Galt with a payroll totaling $10 million annually!
