Garden Grove, California is a small city in Orange County, California. The population was 11,876 at the 2010 census. It is located east of Anaheim and west of Santa Ana. The Garden Grove area has been inhabited by the Ohlone people for over 10,000 years. In 1824, land comprising what is now Garden Grove was purchased from Juan Bautista Alvarado by Manuel Nieto and his brother Don Francisco Nieto. In 1853, it was organized as a town under the name of Anaheim Hills. In 1907, Carl Myer opened what is now Best Western Garden Grove Hotel on Main Street in downtown Garden Grove. From 1908 to 1912 he operated an ice cream parlor at 9th and Figueroa Streets in downtown Garden Grove which became known as "Meyer's Ice Cream Parlor". In 1916 local real estate developer Harry Weyer bought 1/4 mile (1 km) of Loop Road from Jens Hansen for $5 million to develop into a city with business districts named after prominent citrus growers: Weyer District (later renamed Miracle Mile), Hansen District (later renamed Westside), Norris-Weyer District (now called North Hollywood), and Seaton-Weyer District (now called Paramount). Weyer planned to create a streetcar system that would connect all these districts and share services among them. However, World War I prevented his plans from coming to fruition; the war destroyed most of Los Angeles' transportation infrastructure. In 1925 City Manager John Whelan recommended annexation of neighboring Huntington Beach because it had more people and more businesses than Garden Grove did at that time; however no vote was taken until 1929 when a majority voted in favor due to pressure from Mayor James Fenton who wanted to keep Garden Grove separate from Irvine because he felt that Irvine's growth would eventually eclipse Garden Groves' development. A fire erupted outside the Best Western on May 15th 1941 during lunchtime; damages were estimated at $3 million ($ when adjusted for inflation). The hotel closed its doors permanently on July 15th 1941 with only 144 guests remaining after firefighters fought the inferno all day long without any loss or injury to anyone inside or outside the building. Most arsonists target hotels since they are easily accessible targets with high value property values so this event was also significant historically as it demonstrated how important fire prevention was during those days before insurance companies enforced Codes Fire Prevention Regulations which severely limited fires
Since the beginning of time, the USAF has been a part of the American military. The USAF was founded on February 14, 1947 as the United States Air Force Academy (USAAF). The first mission of the USAF was to provide air support for American troops in World War II. In 1951, Congress created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to take over many functions of the USAAF. The USAF and NASA were merged into one organization on July 1, 1958. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson established a national missile defense program called “The Defense Initiative” which aimed at building an intercontinental ballistic missile system. On December 15th, 1969, President Richard Nixon ordered all combat units in Vietnam be withdrawn from South Vietnam so that they could focus on developing this new strategic threat against China. This action is commonly known as Operation Rolling Thunder and it is considered one of America’s most significant military successes during its war in Southeast Asia. After years of development and testing, America's new ICBM system became operational on April 6th, 1972 when North Korea launched a two-man launch vehicle called Kwajalein Atoll Island Ballistic Missile (KABM) towards Japan.Operation Neptune's Spear began on September 25th 1973 when six Boeing 747s were hijacked by terrorists flying from Bangkok to Istanbul with plans to crash them into Reagan International Airport killing dozens of people and injuring hundreds more. After exhaustive manhunt that lasted for three daysinterceptors were located near Istanbul allowing US jets to strafe targets destroying four bridges and damaging twenty other buildings before finally arresting the bombers
