Garden Grove is located on the eastern edge of Anaheim and its downtown district is bounded by Crenshaw Boulevard to the north and east, Imperial Highway to the south, and Glassell Avenue to the west. The first people who lived here came overland from what is now Mexico in 1821. They were called los aguas frescas (the fresh water people). In 1824 they moved here from Anaheim because there was no water available elsewhere. The first post office in Garden Grove was established in 1827. In 1850, some farmers banded together and formed a company to purchase land for a town site. They named their new town Garden Grove after John Wesley Gardiner, an American missionary who had come to Southern California several years earlier as president of Yale College's Mexican student body. The original town had no streets or buildings; it consisted only of a few adobe huts with gardens around them. The population of Garden Grove grew gradually throughout the early 19th century until it reached its peak in 1860 when there were more than 10,000 people living here! However, during the 1860s and 1870s many small businesses went out of business due to lack of competition from large cities such as Los Angeles or San Francisco. As a result of this economic slump, many people chose to move away from GardenGrove during these years. However, it regained most of its benefits when it became an independent city on January 1, 1959. The first business open in Garden Grove was a grocery store called Wigglesworth's Grocery and Brewery. It opened in 1854 by David Wigglesworth and his brother-in-law Amos Kemble. In 1865, Wigglesworth sold the store to John Leland for $1 million dollars. Leland renamed the store Leland's Grocery after he bought it from Wigglesworth.
