The city is located on the eastern edge of Anaheim Hills and borders Anaheim to the north, Long Beach to the east, Glendale to the south and west, and Fullerton to the northwest. After Genuine's bankruptcy, many plants closed or moved out of state while others merged or went bankrupt; however some remain open today including Albertsons (now Kroger) which plans to move all its USA headquarters from Bentonville, Arkansas to Garden Grove by 2021 The city has a large number of homes built during the late 1800s and early 1900s along with a few mansions dating back to that era still standing today; examples include: Bakersfield Roadhouse (1898), Wellesley Drive House (1912), and Arlington Park (1899). Garden Grove is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 68,614 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Garden Grove" originated from an artificial orchard that was built by the local landowner, Colonel George Phipps Garden on what is now Fairview Avenue in 1887. The original orchard still stands and offers a lovely view of downtown LA from its grounds. In 1907, the first recorded instance of a greengrocer opening his business in Garden Grove was Willard Haughton who opened his Grocery and Meat Market on Main Street near present-day Sunset Boulevard. In 1916, during World War I and as part of General Douglas MacArthur's Army of the Pacific Theater, Garden Grove became one of four towns in Orange County to become incorporated as cities (the others being Westminster (1915), Santa Ana (1920) and Irvine (1925)). When MacArthur's forces evacuated Southern California after victory over Japan at Leyte Gulf on 5 December 1945, many stores and businesses closed because they were not hors de combat; among them were Haughton's store which reopened two days later under new ownership with veteran employees from MacArthur's army. In 1951, when Disneyland opened its gates for business within Anaheim proper - only 10 miles away - Garden Grove joined Disneyland as one of its initial municipalities within South Central Los Angeles. One year later it became the second city to be annexed into Anaheim proper following North Hollywood's annexation making it then home to over 100k people living within its boundaries before becoming an official city in 1974 with Downtown Disney Corporation merging into it creating tomorrow’s Greater Los Angeles Area economy today!
