Navy gifts have been a part of Garden Grove's history for over 100 years. When the United States Navy established its headquarters in Garden Grove, California in 1917, Lieutenant Colonel Harry A. Stephenson purchased a large lot on West Second Street for $1,000. The Navy set up quarters there and the property served as part of Naval Station (Garden Grove) until 1923 when it was transferred to the Coast Guard. In 1942, the Coast Guard merged with the US Army to become US Coast Guard Command and Headquarters at Seal Beach. At that time, Commander George W Bush inherited Naval Station (Garden Grove) and changed it into Naval Command Center which still exists today, housing both naval commands as well as support activities for both Services. In 1943, Admiral Chester Nimitz decided to establish San Diego Naval Air Facility which would provide air defense against Japanese ships off California coast. He ordered First Admiral Ernest J King to purchase land on Third Street north of Harbor Drive near San Diego Bay for NAS Point Loma where NAS Point Loma would operate from 1944-1945 including launch pads for fighter planes used in amphibious operations against Japan. NAS Whidbey Island also operated from 1945-1946 using fuel storage tanks ashore which later became USS Midway Museum during 1980s renovation project that destroyed most of original structure including barracks and engine rooms dating back to World War II era! On 1 July 1946 President Harry S Truman signed Executive Order 9265 giving command responsibility for all US forces afloat in Pacific Ocean (including Marine Forces), west of Hawaii - thereby splitting control of Pacific Fleet between Commander thereof Rear Admiral James W Stroud commanding Marines Force at Pearl Harbor while Commander Amphibious Force Support Group Battle Squadron 5 reported directly to him at Guam; Commodore John Kappenstall commanding United States Maritime Commission's Hawaiian Islands Fleet with same jurisdiction; Commander Seventh Fleet Area rugged with Task Group 58.2 consisting solely of 2 battleships Enterprise(CVN 6)& Oklahoma(CVN 7) under Vice Admiral Forrest Sherman OC who had replaced General William Halsey who died suddenly less than two months earlier while commandeered USS Yorktown(CVN 7) after her conversion into an aircraft carrier during conversion process! The Garden Grove Naval Air Station (GGNAS), now the Naval Air Station El Toro, was founded on December 17, 1913 as an auxiliary naval air station at the then unincorporated community of Garden Grove. It was initially manned by four Aero Club members who leased two Curtiss pusher planes from the San Diego-based Pacific Aviation Company. On October 1, 1915 squadron No.2: P-1S "Coyote" became operational and began providing aerial Scouting and Bombing Service to Navy Squadron 10 which had been organized at El Toro on September 8th that year. In 1916 a new hangar and barracks were built in what is now the Main Building on Park Boulevard; this served as homeport for Squadron 2 until 1922 when it moved to Terminal Island Naval Base where it remained until 1929 when it returned to Garden Grove under the command of Commander USN's 3rd Fleet based at El Toro. A detachment of Seaman First Class's 1st Battalion HMCS Vancouver arrived in 1928 from Vancouver, Canada with their first ship: HMCS Calgary which soon replaced HMCS Edmonton as main base for 1st Battalion HMS Vancouver. In 1931 Commandant USN's 3rd Fleet detached Squadron 2 from Terminal Island Naval Base and moved it back to Garden Grove where it remained until 1941 when its detachment was redesignated Squadron 5 (Vancouver) which continued operations out of GGNAS through 1943 before being reassigned to California Group Pacific Fleet based in Pearl Harbor during World War II.. On January 15th 1945 while still attached to Pacific Fleet USS Richmond (CA-24) collided with another destroyer off Iwo Jima killing all seven aboard and wounding over 50 others including Commodore George Dewey who later became Governor of California after winning the 1944 U.S Presidential Election

Garden Grove is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 39,383 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Orange County after Anaheim and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Garden Grove was founded by George C. Clements and his partner James Mapes on November 10, 1887 as a small town on Rancho Santa Ana Blanca from where it derived its name - "garden" coming from "sacred grove". The first post office opened in 1888. In 1895, GGC organized itself as an incorporated town and named it Garden Grove Heights after nearby Garden Grove Cemetery which had been established in 1874 by Judge Augustus Biddle Eaton. In 1898 GGC annexed part of Irvine and reincorporated as Garden Grove Heights; this annexation resulted in the addition of two more wards to GGC's total population of 11. In 1912 GGC repealed its incorporation ordinance because some citizens objected to being governed by an unelected board instead of elected officials who were responsible to their constituents. The City Council did not repeal its ordinance until 1915 when they passed an act stating that all powers vested with them by law shall continue until repealed or modified by law duly adopted by a vote of both chambers thereof; any amendment made thereto shall be effective only for a term beginning immediately following such adoption... (emphasis added) On July 5, 1916, voters approved Measure V which granted charter status to Garden Grove High School District No 1 making it one of the first high schools statewide to receive such state recognition On February 16th 1928 Mayor John Fenton announced that he would not seek re-election due to health reasons On November 3rd 1928 mayor Fenton announced his resignation effective December 15th 1928 leaving office with six weeks remaining on his term
Garden Grove was first settled in 1827 by Captain Christopher Hall and his wife, Hannah. The location of Garden Grove is now a part of the city of Anaheim. Garden Grove was named for Mrs. Hall's father, Daniel Gardnerville. The town had its start as a small agricultural community on the east side of Central Avenue, across from what is now the Honda Center. In 1872, the city of Anaheim annexed Garden Grove and made it its central business district. In 1915, Alice Paul founded the NAACP in Garden Grove and then served as its chairperson until her death in 1983. In 1951, Jackie Robinson played for the Los Angeles Dodgers at their regional park in Garden Grove; this was one of only two times that an African American player played for a major league team outside of Harlem (the other being Willie Mays with the Boston Red Sox). In 1965, after years of planning by Mayor John Ahern and City Manager Don Freeman, Garden Grove became home to Disneyland when it opened up on adjacent land adjacent to downtown Anaheim. It has been home to Disneyland ever since - even if some residents have petitioned to keep it within Orange County limits while they fight redevelopment plans which would create housing developments near Interstate 5 and I-5 motorways in neighboring Cities like Irvine and Tustin. Until very recently there were no public schools inside or around Disneyland - students were bused into nearby cities such as Irvine or Santa Ana for school each day during peak hours (and sometimes overnight). However starting in fall 2006 new elementary/middle school buildings have been built next to DISNEYLAND so that all students can attend together daily from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade without having to go outsideDisneyland each day!
