However, these plans were never realized due to budget cuts by Mayor Fenton before he was replaced by his predecessor Jerry Brown in 1998. The current economy has led to an increase in Army presence within Gardena over the past few years with two installations – Fort Irwin (2005) and Camp Pendleton (2008). Both locations have been used for training purposes only; however they are still significant tourist attractions for locals and visitors alike. During Operation Neptune's Spear (2006), numerous homes within city limits were destroyed or damaged by insurgents who attacked several military installation throughout Southern California including Camp Pendleton Naval Base on November 14th-15th of that year. One resident who lost their home happened to be Captain Don Herrity commanding Company A 2nd Battalion 9th Marine Regiment stationed at Fort Irwin at the time which helped lead to increased support from Navy ships offshore during Battle of Okinawa while also providing civilian assistance on site including removing bodies from impacted homes. Gardena is a city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 54,514 at the 2010 census. Gardena was founded on March 3, 1887 by George H. Park and James H. McDonnell as a small farming town located in what is now the city of Fresno County. It became a City on November 1, 1909. Gardena was named after Rancho Gardena de Cahuenga, which was granted to José Joaquin Alvarado in 1847 by Mexico City governor Porfirio Diaz as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The land that would become Gardena was first organized as an agricultural community called San Bernardino de Gardana by Manuel Nieto and his brother-in-law Pedro Carrillo y Rivera in May 1860 during the Modoc War for control over Mission San Miguel de la Nucia (now downtown Fresno). A post office called San Bernardino de Gardana opened in 1865, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. The Ohlone people were the original inhabitants of this area; they arrived from central California about 1250 AD according to one source and may have been expelled by Spanish settlers around 1769 AD according to another source however evidence suggests they continued to live here for many years after that time. Mexican rancho grants were given out intermittently over time throughout Baja California Province, with some going to individuals or families for relatively minor amounts of land while others went longer term and were larger parcels with multiple grantees. At various points along its Mexican border with present day Soquel Californiana — also within modern-day Fresno County — Rancho Gardena included areas including: parts of Anza Viejo today’s East Bay Community District; extensive portions west of Big Sur today’s Monterey Peninsula Borough; much of today’s Shasta County; eastward into Oregon Territory prior to statehood there; and much current day Nevada County including portions east side Of Yosemite National Park Today’s Livermore Valley near Tracy
