In 1951, the then-Governor of California, Goodwin Procter, presented a donation from Raymond A. McNamara for the creation of the Coast Guard Memorial Museum in Gardena. The first gift was a bronze plaque onyx that read "In Memory Of" and was donated by McNamara himself. In 1976, Governor Jerry Brown presented an additional donation for a new memorial to be erected at Point Conception National Monument. This gift was from Bruce Johnston who had served as Deputy Director of Development for the County of San Diego during the time that Point Conception National Monument was being developed. The new memorial is inscribed with both public and private donations as well as memories from those who have made contributions to both institutions over the years. Today, there are more than 1,000 items on display in The Coast Guard Memorial Museum's collection which include artifacts dating back to 1897 when Commander John Jumper established marine barracks in conjunction with Naval Station Long Beach!

Gardena, CA is a small town in Riverside County, California. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Gardena was founded in 1887 by pioneer individuals who purchased land from the Rancho San Bernardino y Costilla Mexican land grant. It became a city on July 1, 1959. The name of the city comes from twoMission Dolores Adobe Walls that are still visible today on Isleton Road near downtown Gardena. The walls were built between 1892 and 1896 as part of an effort to protect and maintain Frontier culture in what would become Orange County during this time period. The first post office for Gardena was established in 1893 as Gardena Station. In 1907, it changed its name to Gardena after Mayor George Ahern's wife, Eleanor (née Harrigan). The City Council passed Resolution No. 308-A which stated "Gardena shall be called Gardena until further order." On May 10th 1922 Mayor John Jablonski issued a proclamation designating summer evening hours for business purposes only with the understanding that all other activities should resume on Monday morning following Labor Day weekend without regard to that designation; this remains effective to this day! In 1937 movie star John Wayne visited the area while filming his historic western classic "The Searchers". He golfed nearby at Calaveras Hills Country Club and stopped at Isleton Rd & Vista Linda Ave where he had dinner with then-Governor Frank Merriam and his daughter Janey at a private home before continuing on his way.

Gardena, California is a town located in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. The population was 23,895 at the 2010 census. Gardena was founded in 1887 by Andrew Forrest and his partners, George Prentice and John Sutter. The name comes from Ojai Valley which is about 20 miles to the north. Gardena became a city in 1959 and has since grown into one of the most populous communities in Southern California with over 100,000 residents. Gardena’s rich history goes back to its founding as a small rancho community on 185 acres (75 hectares) northeast of downtown Los Angeles by Russian-born Andrew Forrest and his partners George Prentice and John Sutter in 1887. Forrest had come to America from Russia with $3,000 he had earned working as an engineer for Russian gold miners in Siberia. He purchased 115 acres (45 hectares) of land east of downtown Los Angeles where he built a home called “Ojai” after the valley near which he lived. Forrest developed Gardena into what is now one of the most populous communities in Southern California due to his efforts to build roads, schools, churches, hospitals, water systems and other infrastructure items that were needed for settlers moving westward during the early 19th century. At its peak during World War II Gardena had over 50 businesses employing more than 2,000 people including such notable names as Ford Motor Company vice president Henry Ford (1914-2006), Hollywood star Jack Warner (1892-1965), AAF Colonel Harry “Hap” Arnold (1920-2008), composer Jerome Kern (1893-1980) and many others who helped shape Los Angeles County into what it is today. After World War II Gardena struggled with economic struggles but has bounced back several times since becoming a city resulting in increased development opportunities for its citizens as well as creating numerous jobs for local workers throughout its history
