Gardena, California (population: 27,000) is located in the northwestern corner of Los Angeles County. It has a Mediterranean climate with hot and humid summers and mild winters. The area was first settled by the Tongva people in the 18th century. In 1848, Gardena was founded as a small town by James Irvine. The town rapidly grew thanks to its agricultural production and its location on the 101 freeway. By 1970, Gardena had become an upscale suburb of Los Angeles. However, its growth stagnated during the late 1980s and early 1990s due to economic recession in Southern California. After several years of revitalization, gardena resumed its growth in the 2000s through annexation by Los Angeles County and a series of commercial developments around it. Today, Gardena is one of the most ethnically diverse cities inLos Angeles County and remains an attractive place to live for both residents and workers alike. Gardena is bordered by Eagle Rock to the north-east, Hermosa Beach to the west-northwest, West Hollywood to the south-southwest, Beverly Hills to the east-central region and Carson City Mesa to the southeast. The city extends for about half a mile along Centennial Boulevard from downtown down towards Exposition Park where it meets Wilshire Boulevard just east of Koreatown Village. Gardena, California was founded in 1876 by George A. Calkins and his brother-in-law, John Sutter. The original town site was on the east side of what is now downtown San Bernardino County. In 1881, Calkins sold the town to J.P. Morgan and Company for $10,000. In 1916, Henry Ford bought the town from Morgan and renamed it Gardena after himself and his wife Alma (née Dearborn). There were only a few hundred residents at its peak in 1916, but over time the population grew to around 10,000 due to new housing developments, retail businesses opening up around the city center and growing access to education and health care opportunities. Gardena experienced significant growth during World War II as a result of its strategic location within easy reach of military installations such as Fort MacArthur and Wright Patuxent Naval Air Station. The city also became known for its popular soft drinks called "Gardena Pops". After the war ended in 1945, gardenians experienced rapid postwar growth as they began attracted back into their community byemployment opportunities in local businesses such as small factories that reopened following World War II or new industrial plants established outside of metropolitan Los Angeles County; these economic expansions later led to increased suburban development within minutes' ride of Gardena's downtown core. The City Council passed Resolution No. 3 filed with the Clerk of Courts on July 15th 1964 recognizing that "the present day conditions exist which make it necessary for an action to be taken amending Chapter 2 – Municipal Code" pertaining thereto; this resolution proposed creation of a Planning Commission which would "planning Renderings should be prepared containing recommendations for future ordinance changes herein." On November 5th 1966 City Council adopted Resolution No. 4 authored by Mayor Hickey providing for establishment forthwith of a Civil Rights Committee composed thereof including: Drs James Ransom (Chair), Julius Epstein (Vice Chair) Revd Jesse Jackson Jr., Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt (Secretary) Mrs Jane Addams (President Emeritus)." This committee soon came into being when Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr., acting upon information received from citizens protesting segregated bus service travelling through their neighborhood near Willowbrook Elementary School; he convened an all-night meeting attended by several dozen people on December 1st1966 which resulted in passage then repeal of Measure U2V - Ordinance # 6359 establishing segregation along jurisdictional lines throughout portions of San Bernardino County resulting in mass protest throughout much of 1967 dubbedOperation Spring Awakening."
The first Europeans to set foot on Gardena soil were the Spanish in 1769. The land was given to them by Rancho San Diego de Alcalá, a grant made to Juan Bautista Lassen during the Mexican–American War. After Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821, portions of California were annexed by the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1853, Gardena became a city and was named for Edwin Augustus Gardenia, an American naturalist who helped document California's plants and animals.
