Gardena, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. Gardena is located on the eastern edge of the Antelope Valley about 15 miles (24 km) east of downtown Los Angeles and 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Orange County. The first Europeans to visit Gardena were Spanish missionaries who established mission stations here in 1821. In 1864, General George Armstrong Custer passed through this area on his way from Sacramento to Mexico City and named it after General Antonio López de Santa Anna's general staff Headquarters located here near what is now known as Conejo Street. A post office was established at Gardena in 1870, and a year later an agricultural society was organized with a store and barn on Main Street. In 1875 almond orchards were established by Manuel Nieto along Mission Road between Enterprise Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard; these orchards remain today as one of the largest concentrations of almonds in Southern California. In 1907 the first electric streetcar system operated in Southern California when two cars ran down Main Street from Pasadena to Inglewood; these cars were powered by horse-drawn power sources until 1923 when electrification became standard for streetcars throughout Southern California. During World War II many local businesses engaged in manufacturing munitions including Bakelite which was produced here at Westinghouse Manufacturing Company before being sent overseas to help defeat Nazi Germany. In 1951 Gardena voters approved annexation by Los Angeles County; this annexation created much social change for residents as it brought new opportunities for employment withinLos Angeles County government while also increasing its size relative to neighboring communities such as Anaheim Hills and Irvine Spectrum which had been annexed earlier that year by Los Angeles County but did not experience similar levels of economic growth or social transformation due to their separate municipal governments with different boundaries). Gardena, California is a small city in the eastern Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. Gardena became an incorporated city on February 14, 1936. It is located about 95 miles east of Los Angeles and 40 miles north of Palm Springs. The community began as a small farming town named Gardena on Hacienda de las Flores in 1887 by pioneers Charles Haskell and his wife Lillie Haskell. In 1916, they founded what would become known as Western Electric Company’s Palmdale campus; which now houses various university campuses including UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton. On February 14, 1936, Gardena became an incorporated city with Alderman Jens Petersen (D-LA) as its first mayor. The incorporation was one of many early steps to bringing new life to a desert town that had been abandoned for more than 25 years after the completion of Los Angeles County's radial road system. As part of the postwar suburban growth in Southern California, Gardena saw rapid development from its small downtown into a bustling community with several dozen businesses and over 200 residentships during the late 1940s through the 1960s when it was still considered an agricultural center dotted with adobe buildings that served primarily as cotton farms and ranches
Gardena was founded in 1853 by three brothers, George, William and John Gardena. The first post office in the town was established in 1854. In 1870, the town changed its name to Gardena after Paloma Angeles, the daughter of Spanish Governor General Manuel Nieto de la Vega. The City of Gardena was incorporated on January 15, 1915. In 1922 a dam was constructed along with other irrigation projects that now form part of the City's watershed system. It is also said that President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Gardena during his 1936 visit to Southern California and ordered an engineering study be done on a possible site for a new U.S Naval Weapons Station at Point Mugu which ultimately didn't happen due to World War II.[1] In 1957, Hollywood movie star Tyrone Power filmed scenes forlawrence Wagon Train at the old Donnybrook Mine near present day Gardena Boulevard and I-805 where he would later reside for many years before moving out into his own home in 2007;[2][3] power died in 2015 aged 93 years old
