The Gardenas were a farming family from Northern California that moved to Southern California in the early part of the 20th century. They began growing crops and raising livestock on their farmstead in what is now Orange County. In 1916, they opened a store at 815 S Figueroa Street in Gardena, which became one of the first stores in Southern California. In 1924, they shifted their business to selling automobiles and tractor parts. Their store closed in 1951 but reopened as an auto dealership in 1957. In 1971, they sold their house and land to the City of Gardena for use as a park. The garden has been kept open as a public access point ever since.
