The Gardena Marine Museum is located in the heart of downtown Gardena. The museum was founded in 1978 and contains more than 450 exhibits on maritime history from California's Coastal Zone to the Red Sea. The museum also offers a variety of programs for adults, children, and families. Gardena was known as an important port for wine shipment during the Gold Rush era. In 1851, wealthy Mr. John Pemberton donated land to the town to build a wharf and harbor. By 1865, the town had developed into a thriving seaport with warehouses, brickyards, and light industries such as printing presses and shoe factories. In 1915, local businessmen organized a group to promote culture and tourism in Gardena through establishing the Western Municipal League (WML). Through this organization, Gardena became one of Coast Guard District 2's "tourist towns." In 1925, WML erected a historical marker at Pier 4 commemorating Town Councilwomen Florence Aird (1868-1947) and May Weller (1874-1964). By the early 1940s, Gardena was known as one of America’s most notorious locations for smuggling atomic secrets out of Japan. One of the first reports on this activity came from World War II veteran Harry Houdini who reported seeing Japanese officers aboard USS Indianapolis loading plutonium onto submarines while he was fishing off shore in 1942. The Harbor Master’s Office operated out of Pier 3 until 1958 when they moved to Station 1 behind First National Bank building which housed their offices until 1984 when they moved back inside Pier 3 Building because it had been condemned by City Hall according to fire code regulations that did not exist then! During WWII there were many Naval vessels stationed Fleet Yards throughout California including HMCS Windsor which conducted nuclear tests at San Onofre Island off Southern California during 1945-46! It should be noted that these Naval vessels were not used for nuclear testing but were instead used for shipyard repairs/maintaining naval ships! Another interesting story about Navy Ships stationed at our Coast Guard District 2 Facility is that between 1951-1973 several USNS Cimarrones were stationed at Seal Beach facility due to concerns about smugglers shipping weapons from Mexico across state lines! After years of research it has been determined that these ships never actually served any purpose other than providing photo opportunities for tourists!!!

Gardena, California is located in the Central Valley of California and is bordered by Kern County to the north, Tulare County to the east, and Bakersfield County to the south. The population was reported as 35,971 in 2010. Gardena lies at an elevation of 6,643 feet (2,821 m) above mean sea level. The City of Gardena was organized on December 1st 1902 when a group of farmers banded together to form a cooperative agricultural society. The name was chosen because it falls within a radius that includes Anaheim and Santa Ana. On November 8th 1907 the City of Gardena annexed parts of unincorporated areas near Redondo Beach. In 1909 there were only 12 residents in Gardena; however by 1915 there were over 200 people living in the city. In 1920 two new blocks were added to Gardena – East 3rd Street and Southwest 4th Street. In 1925 a new library was built on East 3rd Street which still stands today. On January 11th 1930 Mayor Harry Sayers proposed annexing what is now known as Cajon Park into the city limits for development purposes but this proposal was not accepted by the Board of Supervisors. In 1933 Mayor Richardson vetoed an ordinance establishing public water service within Municipal boundaries which would have allowed annexation into the city limits without first being approved by the Board of Supervisors

Gardena is located on the San Bernardino Mountains and bordered by San Diego to the north and east, Riverside County to the south, and Fullerton to the west. The first people who lived in Gardena were Mono Indians. The Mono Tribe of California left their ancestral land in 1849 when gold was found near Sutter's Mill. They traveled through what is now Kern County and persevered until about 1876 when they lost all their land to ranching interests. In 1906, however, they regained some of their rights after a US Supreme Court decision known as Plessy v Ferguson (also known as "Dred Scott"). Gardena became associated with agriculture because it had been part of Rancho Cucamonga which was later acquired by John Millington Hughes in 1907. Millington Hughes wanted to develop his property into an entrepôt for citrus fruit production but ran into resistance from other landowners who feared that he would lower their prices or take away their crops altogether. He finally obtained permits from the US Forest Service and built a factory on his property that produced oranges for distribution throughout Southern California. The company failed within a few years due to overproduction; however, Hughes reopened it in 1911 as one of America's original orange grocers and remains so today. In 1923, marketing research revealed that customers preferred oranges not only from Southern California but also from Nevada because of its cooler climate; this led Millington Hughes to open two more factories there before eventually closing them both down due to lack of business opportunities in either state during the Great Depression of 1930–1933). However, he never lost faith in Orange County: three years later he decided againto open another factory there – this time producing grapefruit – which successively operated until 1977 when it closed due to economic troubles unrelated to citrus production (it reopened again under new management several years later). After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, many Japanese Americans were interned at Lompoc Naval Air Station during World War II; many of these individuals bought homes nearby or relocated into Gardena after being released from prison camps across northern California.
