From there, the tradition grew and continued with other officers and enlisted personnel until it reached its current form with Operation Neptune's Spear in 2001. 2) In 1978, then-Marine colonel Rick Majerus sent baskets filled with candy and cigarettes to units deployed throughout Southeast Asia. This gesture of goodwill was followed up by many other gestures such as sending Christmas trees to Marines stationed overseas in years past. 3) In 2007, then-Marine lieutenant colonel Brett Hundley created a special gift for his unit members during deployment season which was known as "Operation Jingle Bell." The gift consisted of an entire case filled with jingles from all over the Marine Corps website (www.marinesocietyonline.org). This gave each member their own personalized online military page where they could post photos, news, and anything else that related to their service career! There were even jokes about what type of jingles each individual Marine had chosen! It was an extremely popular gift and one that continues to be received today! 4) Recently, the Marine Corps has also gone beyond just giving away small items like candy bars or flowers - they've also started doing something really unique and thoughtful called "Gift History Month." Gardena is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Gardena was founded in 1887 by George A. Wilson and his wife Sarah C. Wilson as a small agricultural settlement east of Bakersfield on the San Joaquin River. It became an incorporated municipality in 1910. In 1907, George A. Wilson bought 480 acres (2 km2) of Rancho Nueces land west of Gardena from José Estrada and turned it into a garden community called "Nueces Gardens". In 1916, he sold the remaining acreage to Harry Chandler for $270,000 (). The original Gardena post office was established in 1886 with William Hinton as its first supervisor. In 1914, it changed its name to Gardena because of incorporation into Kern County and since then has been known as that code's namesake town. The name may have been chosen because of nearby hills named Nueces which are also often called "Gardena Hills" or "Nieces Hills". According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,812 people residing in the town: 998 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25% were non-families; 21%of all households were made up of individuals and 8% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
