By 1922-1923, the Gardena War Department had stopped deployments altogether due to budget cuts. However, sporadic deployments continued until 1952 when all combat troops were withdrawn from California. In 1953, a grant was given to Gardena for use as an armory and storage facility for weapons and munitions used by the police department. Since then, it has been used by various law enforcement agencies including Butte County Sheriff’s Office and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. It is also significant because it is one of only two armories in California open to the public which allows visitors access to different types of firearms as well as ammunition. However, they continued to be popular among retirees who enjoyed long walks or gentle mountain views outside their doorsteps. In recent decades, garden-style homes have once again become popular among homeowners in Southern California due to their affordability and comfortable living conditions inside and outside their doors. Despite this resurgence in interest from buyers, however, there are still few examples of these types of homes remaining extant within Central City today - likely because they are not desired by current residents or developers alike who see them as less desirable than more traditional styles of homebuilding."
Gardena is an incorporated city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 20,521 at the 2010 census. Gardena was founded in 1868 by brothers Edward and George Gardena as a small farming community on the east side of San Bernardino Valley. The city's first post office opened in 1870 and it became a full-time municipality in 1893. In 1912, Gardena annexed part of neighboring Riverside County and its population increased to 30,000. In 1954, Gardena voted to become an independent city with its own government. The City Council adopted a resolution pledging itself "to continue striving for excellence through service to all who call our city home." In 1978, the City of Gardena approved Measure A which designated land along Interstate 15 as the new downtown area. This area included much of what is now the eastern edge of the current city limits including most of present-day Gandy Park and parts of what is now Midtown Riverside. The measure also set aside $25 million for downtown redevelopment over 10 years which has led to many new businesses opening up in this rapidly growing section of town. Today, Downtown Gardena features many high-end shops and restaurants as well as several cultural attractions such as the Rose Bowl stadium; one of only two stadiums used exclusively for American football (the other being Levi's Stadium). The current mayor is Jacquelyn Margolis with term beginning on January 1, 2019
