On December 6, 1916, the City of Gardena merged with the County of Los Angeles. The first known white person to live in Gardena was Jens Christensen from Denmark who came to America with his family in 1847. He began trading goods with Mission Indians and built a small cabin near present day Battle Creek Road. Christensen's son Ole Pedersen started farming here in 1851 and acquired some additional land around 1850 along what is now east side of Antelope Valley Boulevard north of Mulberry Street. In 1863, Ole Pedersen married Anna Maria Hjort from Sønderborg (now Roskilde) who had come to America as a slave working for her Danish master at Lodi Ijen Plantation on Rodeo Drive near Ventura Boulevard south of downtown Los Angeles. Anna Maria Hjort is buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery next to her husband Ole Pedersen. In 1875 John Mapes established the first dry goods store west of the Mississippi River called The Girdler's Store which operated until 1903 when it moved across Pershing Avenue into what is now Midway Plaza shopping center adjacent to Staples Center north of Highland Park Boulevard east of Sepulveda Boulevard south of Ventura Boulevard west of Highland Park Boulevard opened on October 15th 1915 by entrepreneur Harry Cohn as "The Paramount Building". The movie theater complex originally consisted onlyof two storefronts each measuring forty feet wide by thirty feet deep with an interior ceiling height of ninety-six feet . Although initially built as an entertainment venue primarily for vaudeville shows featuring stars like Edison Brothers nickelodeons were leased out for movies starting February 17th 1926 feature film projector Fenton Crosby developed plans for using this new movie theater complex as aKNIGHTLY production studio producing such motion pictures including "The Jazz Singer" starring Gene Kelly precursor versions such as "Moby Dick" also produced there beginning September 1928 also largest screen ever erected seventy foot wide x thirty foot deep ; both auditoriums could seat 4500 people each giving rise to popular nickname : "Hollywood Chinese Theatre" . This large screen hosted premieres not only Hollywood blockbusters but international films , most notably Orson Welles novel "Touch Of Evil" released on October 30th 1929 . By 1933 all theaters closed except one which reopened under new management as the Pantages Theatre chain continuing operations until its closure effective January 3rd 1951 following riots that year over censorship policies instituted by then County Manager Don Aitken
