Gardena is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Kern River about 12 miles north of Bakersfield. The name comes from the Spanish word "garden" which means "to tend." The first people to live in Gardena were ranch hands who ranges traveled throughout central and southern California during the 1800s. In 1887, James Harshbarger bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land on what is now Main Street in Gardena and began developing it into a small town. He named his new settlement after himself, George Gardena. The area around today's Main Street became part of Gardena when Harshbarger sold his land to John Vickers in 1907. By 1912, there were just six residents living in Gardena; all of whom worked for Vickers or rented from him. The first school was built near the intersection of Main and McClurg Streets in 1916; it was soon replaced by a Methodist church that same year. A post office called Green Valley was established in 1922, but ceased operations due to lack of customers. In 1927, Vickers sold his remaining land to Harry Brownell and acquired the old Post Office building as well as several other buildings including a blacksmith shop and general store. Brownell developed retail along Route 66 south of present-day Park Avenue into what is now known as Brownells Plaza Shopping Center Limited Partnership d/b/a SuperTarget Stores Inc., one of America's largest Walmarts chain stores with over $100 billion in annual sales as of 2018). During World War II, most gardeners turned their attention towards growing crops for food rather than munitions production; this changed when DuPont chemist August Wegener discovered plutonium oxide (and later uranium oxide) while working at their White Sands Missile Range research center east of downtown Los Angeles during 1942-1943; he decided to develop this material into an atomic bomb instead because he believed its potential would be much greater than that offered by traditional explosives development methods at that time In 1945, Jerald Veatch purchased brownfields adjacent to City Hall lot between First Street and Second Street from Harry Brownell for $1 million dollars ().
