Gardena, California is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California. The community is located on the east side of the Kern River. It is west of Bakersfield and east of Fresno. The population was 5,075 at the 2000 census. Gardena is part of the Bakersfield-Porterville Micropolitan Statistical Area. Gardena was founded in 1878 by Emmet J. Stoner and his wife Mary Jane Aspinwall as a small farming town on a site that now includes the community's downtown area and several smaller outlying villages or "townships." In 1915, Gardena annexed part of neighboring Porterville which gave it its current name - Gardena being either an abbreviation for Porterville or simply “Garden” because there were no other towns within three miles (5 km) of the original settlement). In 1924, when parts of Kern County were divided between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, Gardena became one of those areas. According to The George Jones Company history book "From Rice to Railroad: A History of Kern County" (1957), there had been plans to build a railway from Bakersfield northward through what are now eastern Kern County into what was then known as Mono Valley since at least 1879 but those plans never came to fruition; however, Railway Age magazine reports that construction began on a line northeast from Bakersfield in 1902 and continued until 1907 when it was cancelled due to lack of funding; finally, construction resumed on the line near present day Gardena in 1909 after Ted Turner purchased most of the existing rights-of-way from Southern Pacific Railroad Ltd.; thus making Gardena one of only two places in southwest California where railroad tracks still run today (the other being Atascadero). It should be noted that while many residents have erroneously heard about railways running through their town during this time period - such as with reference to claims thatTrain Station Park stands just outside current day Gardena proper - all such references actually refer back to older times when travel across Kern County involved following Paiute trails overland instead! The first people to live in Gardena were the Ohlone Indians who lived on the banks of the Santa Ana River before moving upstream to present-day Anaheim. In 1795, Rancho San Bernardino y Costilla was granted to José de la Garza and David Starr Pearce for Rancho Los Nietos which encompassed what is now Gardena. The land which became Gardena was part of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on May 1, 1827 by Governor Pio Pico as New Mexico Territory from section 7 of Rancho Santiago de Atascadero grant to Manuel Nieto and his brother Fernando Guerrero as part of 432 square miles (1,300 km²). On November 15, 1854 under Mexican rule Alta California gain hands over when American forces overran Mexico during the Californios' uprising against Mexican rule at Buenaventura Heights. After Victoria's victory in1857 Overland Mail trip led by General Harrison arrived here with news that gold had been found in California but no one knows how much or where it was located so they elected John Sutter as governor who started building towns along what would become Interstate 5 near Loma Prieta National Monument on October 6th 1861 On November 16 1860 when US troops burned down La Hacienda de las Flores belonging to José Joaquin Moraga this event signaled beginning of Stockton's conquest of southern Orange County In 1865 after several years more effort by General George Custer during Indian Wars ended with surrender of all local Native Americans including Menominee Chief Wabash Weyburn at Fort Angeleno these events led to creation of Angeles National Forest A group of businessmen led by James Fenton founded Jardin des Plantes nursery & gardens in 1868 affectionately known as “Fenton’s Domain” while others formed a company called Pacific Gas and Electric Co Incorporated February 2 1920 named Pacific Gas & Electric Company plc formerly Southern California Edison Company; electric service began December 14th 1921 This company merged into Western Electric Company on October 24 1951 . In 1927 Mayor Harry Chandler proposed that name be changed from Gardena to Irvine because then most people living there were students attending UC Riverside . In 1940 City Council passed resolution changing name back again to Gardena after home state Assemblymember Anna Hazen walked out onto State Capitol steps wearing a green gown denouncing censorship laws she said were putting UCLA students at a disadvantage . Thereafter ordinance No. 9676 authorized use of Streetscape names such as College Avenue Park Avenue Drive etceteras prior written street numbers have been retained
Gardena was founded on April 6, 1892 by Captain Edwin P. Gardena and his wife, Belle. The first post office in Gardena was established in 1893. The city of Gardena was incorporated on November 15, 1912. The United States Navy's USS "Arizona" sunk on December 8, 1941 within sight of the City of Gardena after hitting a Japanese submarine while en route to attack Pearl Harbor. On January 7, 1942 the USS "Alaska" sank the Japanese battleship Yamato off ashore in Yorba Linda California as part of Operation Downfall which destroyed Japan's only Pacific Fleet at sea.
