In 1906, portions of southern Santa Clara County were annexed to Gardena and it began to grow rapidly as a bedroom community for San Jose. On Jan. 1, 1948, portions of western Santa Clara County were annexed to Gardena as well. Today both cities are home to over 120,000 residents.
