Gardena, California is a town of over 30,000 people on the banks of the San Gabriel River. The two most popular tourist attractions in Gardena are the Arroyo Seco and Mount Wilson National Parks. These national parks were created in 1916 as part of a larger effort to protect Los Angeles County from development by creating buffer zones between residential neighborhoods and natural areas. The original plan for Gardena included a golf course and recreational areas for the public. However, it was not until 1907 that the first golf course was built in Gardena. That same year, a park was opened named after Captain George Armstrong Custer and his horse “Buffalo Bill”. This park became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Gardena due to its beauty and easy access to other points of interest in Los Angeles County. In 1933, Gardena incorporated as a city and began developing its infrastructure including water systems, sewers, streetlights, schools, libraries, hospitals and businesses. In 1938, City Council voted to name Arroyo Seco Park after General James Akins Caldwell who had served as Mayor of Los Angeles during World War II. The decision to name Arroyo Seco Park helped drive tourism into Gardena which has since become one of LA’s leading commercial districts. Gardena, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 25,972 at the 2010 census. Gardena was founded in 1887 and became an incorporated city in 1909. It became a town in 1922 and then a city in 1959. The current mayor is Mark Ridley-Thomas. The first Europeans to visit Gardena were Jedediah Smith and his party of six men on their way from Monterey Bay to Santa Barbara on July 24, 1824. A small settlement was established by Captains George Vancouver and Thomas Dickenson on February 17, 1825 near what is now Ventura Boulevard and Valley Parkway; it was known as "Gardena" because of the many gardenias that grew thereabouts. The first post office for Gardena was founded on December 1, 1886 by Wm. Hickey with the name of Rancho Los Alamitos (now part of El Cajon). On October 14, 1907 it changed its name to Gardena after City Councilman John P. Gardner who hadIntroduced the measure to rename the city after himself when he took office as Mayor of Los Angeles on January 3rd that year effective upon being elected November 5th following the general election held November 4th which saw no candidate receive more than 50% of the vote statewide . In 1939 trustees met at Vista del Rey High School where they voted unanimously to construct a new high school campus east of Interstate 10 between Old Town Pasadena (then called North Park) and Gadsden Hills (then called East Pasadena). Architecturally speaking this ambitious project represented one among many dramatic changes during this period including growth rates exceeding 20%. It opened its doors to students on September 9th 1940 as Our Lady's Precious Heart Catholic School before becoming known as Willowbrook High School when State funding sources began providing significant assistance for public schools through programs such as categorical grants which provided financial assistance targeted at specific districts within certain counties or cities/towns etc... In 1967 construction began on San Manuel Hall - a state-of-the-art science center adjacent to present day Flower Street BART Station - led by local architect Harry Weese who also designed Loyola Marymount University's West end Campus across I-10 from which students could easily commute into downtown Los Angeles
Gardena was founded in 1881 by brothers John and George Gardena. The Gardenas were originally from Italy and immigrated to California in the late 1800s. They opened a small grocery store on Redondo Boulevard in Gardena and soon began trading goods such as fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and bread. In 1902, they added a second store on Union Avenue in nearby Hermosa Beach. By 1916, the Gardenas had two stores and operations stretched out into adjacent neighborhoods including Hermosa Beach and Canoga Park. In 1922, the family merged with the McNaught brothers who ran an avenue department store chain in Southern California. The merger led to increased competition for gardena-area businesses but also helped spread their brand across America. The Gardenas continued to operate their stores until 1969 when they sold them all to Jardine & Leach Holdings of Hong Kong for $175 million. After selling their stores, the Gardenas lived quietly until John died suddenly at age 91 in 1978. His wife Gertrude took over business management until her death in 1984; after that she was succeeded by her son David Jardine Jr.. Gertrude's granddaughter Dianna Jardine became CEO of Jardine & Leach Holdings upon her mother's death in 2011.
