The Gilroy Air Force Base deployed a gift to the community in 1984. The then-new $1 million, state-of-the-art air force installation was dedicated with an air show and open house. A gift from then-President Ronald Reagan was also on hand. Aircrew members at Gilroy AFB donated their time and equipment for Operation Desert Shield, which took place in 1990. They flew more than 2,000 missions over Iraq during that year’s conflict. After the war, the air force station’s helicopter squadron donated two helicopters to serve as mobile command posts during peacekeeping operations in Kosovo in 1999 and 2000. In 2002, the base opened its new library, which was funded through a grant from foundations including The Guggenheim Foundation and Boeing Co.—the first of its kind at any American military base. That same year, the air force also gifted two F/A-18C Super Hornets to the City of San Jose for use as part of its police department’s aerial demonstration program. In 2007, Gilroy AFB hosted the California National Balloon Championship—the first such event held in that state since 1978.

Gilroy is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is located 38 miles east of Fresno and 224 miles north of Los Angeles. The first settlers in Gilroy were people who had come overland from Mexico in 1847. They named their community after General José de Arguello y Costilla, who helped lead the Mexican War of Independence against Spain. The city was founded on July 14, 1889 by citizens of Fresno and Bakersfield who gathered to create a town that would be bypassed by those two cities on the route of the Tejon Pass Road. The name Gilroy was chosen because it sounded like an Indian word meaning "place where no one goes." In 1907, Gilroy became a city under state jurisdiction when it merged with nearby Lodi. In 1961, it became an unincorporated community again when its status as a city was changed to rural township

Gilroy, California is a small town in the Sonoma County region of Northern California. The population was 7,713 at the 2010 census. It is located on Highway 101 between Santa Clara and Napa Counties. In 1853, Spanish missionaries founded the Mission San Francisco de Asís (TheMission of Our Lady of Sorrows), which is now part of Gilroy. The town was first named Rancho El Cerrito because it was near an elk ranch that had been seized by the Mexican government in 1836 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The townsite was platted in 1868 by John Cranch and Wm. Ewing under the name Rancho El Cerrito del Norte. In 1870, James Fenton bought land around Gilroy from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $10 per acre and called it Rancho Fenton Grande (Greater Fenton). A post office called Gilroy was established in 1886, and remained in operation until 1914. In 1907, George Hearn merged his two businesses—the Jardine Lumber Company and American Bay Mines—into one enterprise, American Bay Mines & Jardine Lumber Company Ltd., which became known as ABL&JL after its founders' initials. ABL&JL developed many large manufacturing interests including printing presses and automobiles; it also invested heavily in real estate development throughout Northern California during this time period. AFL&JL merged with Associated Press Corporation to form APCO Worldwide Incorporated on October 1st 1957; APCO's main offices were located at 5555 Market Street in downtown San Francisco until its move to 20 Bryant Drive atrium inside Golden Gate Park on April 15th 1999. On July 14th 1978 ABC television network decided to affiliate with local rival KQED-TV instead of APCO-Widevine (later Time Warner) due to market conditions. However, Time Warner would regain affiliation with KQED when they purchased ABC's share in 1995. With that merger came increased competition for increasingly scarce broadcast spectrum from cable providers such as HBO/CBS/CW. According to Silicon Valley historian Kevin Starr: "As technology advanced new opportunities for advertising emerged: direct marketing through personal appearances by spokesmen known only to those who could be induced into viewing a particular commercial or product [...] Television replaced print advertisements...with soundbytes transmitted over phone lines."[2]
