The United States Army was first deployed to Gilroy, California in 1898. The town’s history dates back to 1847 when the Mexican War began and General Antonio Lopez Bonilla founded a post here as part of the Mexican-American War effort. After the war, General Lopez Bonilla donated land to the town for its future growth. In 1876, work on a new military post began in what is now known as Fort Point. The fort was completed in 1879 and became an important staging ground during American Indian Wars. It also served as a base of operations for Santa Clara County’s militia during World War II. In 1951, the California National Guard was activated here and Gilroy became an active duty military community with jurisdiction over all of Solano County. Today, the Army remains stationed at Fort Benning in Georgia while local units provide support for law enforcement and other essential services.

The first European to visit what is now Gilroy was Gaspar de Portolà, who passed through the area on his way to explore and map out parts of central California. In 1821, Mission San Francisco de Asís built on land granted by Mexico near present-day Gilroy. American settlers arrived in 1848 and began leasing land from the Mexican government for ranching and farming. The town was founded on April 15, 1850 as part of Rancho Nevada del Arroyo Seco by Dominguez & Cámpora. It was initially named "Ovarian" after José Ovelar y Arellano, captain general of Mexican forces that fought against United States forces during the Mexican–American War. In 1860, when gold fever reached California following discovery at Sutter’s Fort in Northern California, many people flocked to Gilroy looking for new opportunities. The Town Council established an assay office and began issuing money orders called “dollars” which became exchangeable for goods or services at local businesses such as stores or hotels. In 1865, when gold prices started dropping due to overproduction by miners in Colorado and elsewhere around the country – hitting a low during 1865–66 – local merchants issued notes redeemable only at branches of major banks throughout Northern California including those here in Gilroy itself. Gold prices resumed soaring during 1868-69 as railroads were built linking mines all across America with growing demand for coins from users all over Europe and Asia; eventually reaching $2 per ounce (1887). This drove commercial activity ashore which helped spur development along Main Street leading into today’s downtown core with its imposing Victorian buildings dating back to 1870/71… Today much remains unchanged […] except perhaps increased access to transportation options via Interstate 5 or Highway 70B outside town limits

Gilroy, California was founded on October 14, 1853 by Gideon Lee and others. The town became a post office on November 15, 1853. On May 4, 1860, the town was renamed to Gilroy after Major General John Gilroy who served in the Mexican-American War and later as United States Commissioner of Indian Affairs. The first store in what is now Gilroy opened its doors on December 1, 1860. The population of the town reached 2,500 by 1870. In 1872, an act was passed which granted land east of the San Joaquin River to be set aside for a public square in downtown Gilroy. This square would come to be known as Main Street and it is there that many events and attractions have taken place over the years such as rallies and parades honoring local veterans or celebrating independence days like June 6th or July 4th. The growth of the city caused some problems for locals including increased taxes which led to labor unrest during the early 20th century when jobs were hard to find in a growing city with limited resources. In 1901, Mayor John Haggerty put together a committee which recommended that all businesses within 5 blocks of City Hall should pay an annual rent amounting to $1 per inhabitant instead of just $5 per year which at that time still amounted to a lot of money for small merchants trying to keep up with larger businesses along Main Street. This ordinance helped reduce violence and crime in downtown while also improving business conditions for residents and tourists alike since they no longer hadto worry about their assessments being garnished if they didn’t pay their rent on time
