The Gilroy Army National Guard was organized on 17 May 1886. The first unit to be activated was the 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment. It was then attached to the 6th Infantry Brigade, First Division, California Volunteers. On 25 November 1898, the battalion became part of the 8th Infantry Brigade, First Division and served in Guam during World War II as an infantry regiment. After the war it returned home and disbanded on 15 January 1946. The battalion re-activated on 1 October 1951 as a unit of the 9th Infantry Brigade, California Army National Guard. It served in Desert Shield and Persian Gulf Wars before being mobilized for Operation Shasta in 1991. It remains inactive today with a total strength of only a few cadets since it is no longer eligible for federal funding which would allow it to maintain its equipment or training program like other active duty military units in Gilroy Unified School Districts across California.
Gilroy, California is a city in Alameda County, California. The population was 23,909 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gilroy were members of an expedition led by American captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1775 and named it "San Miguel". He may have been looking for a way to find his way back to San Diego after completing his circumnavigation of the world. In 1821 Gilroy became part of Contra Costa County when that area was split off from Richmond County. During World War II, Gilroy served as a training ground for United States Army Air Forces pilots and aircrews involved in the China-Burma-India Theater. More recently, it has become known for its wine production, which began in 1865 and continues today. The city also contains one of Northern California's largest wineries - Chateau Montelena Winery - as well as two restaurants - Baja Cantina and R&D Burger Joint -and two shopping malls: Onegrove Mall and Southcenter Mall. The City Council established Community Development Authority (CDA) with powers over land use planning, economic development and public works within the limits prescribed by City Charter § 1(a). CDA also developed plans for redevelopment of portions of downtown including Control Valley Center Campus &Village (formerly Tractor Supply), Jack London Square &Old Town Plaza (former Sears), Northgate Shopping Center &Southgate Plaza (former Macy's)
