Gilroy is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 27,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Joaquin County and the home of several large agricultural businesses. The first permanent settler in what would become Gilroy was George Jones in 1824. He named his land Rancho de las Pulgas (Pulgas Ranch), after one of his two daughters who were born there. The town site was chosen for its location on high ground that overlooked both the Stockton and Sacramento valleys and its mild climate made it an ideal place to grow crops. A post office called Gilroy was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1865. In 1852, James Fenton built a small adobe house on a hill overlooking the town center which he called "Fenton's Fort". This became the first courthouse in Gilroy. In 1870, John Sutter arrived from Northern California with his brother-in-law Charles Evans to found Sutterville on land that currently forms part of downtown Gilroy. They named their new settlement after themselves – John Sutter's hometown of Solano County – though this name never caught on and eventually reverted to "Gilroy". By 1880, Gilroy had reached its peak as a commercial center due to its location at the intersection of three major routes: Mother Road (now Interstate 680), Donner Avenue (now State Route 136) and Highway 34 (now Interstate 5). The Commercial Street Bridge over Donner Creek helped make Gilroy an important transportation hub during this time period In 1896, when local entrepreneurs Peter Jansen and Alfred Pfeiffer bought 10 acres south of Main Street for $1 million they renamed it Park Place after their friends president Grover Cleveland who had recently died. It wasn't until 1915 when Park Place morphed into what is now downtown - name change by City Council because all other lands within park were taken up by housing developments catering to military personnel stationed nearby during World War I .
